Service was scheduled for the following day and finished in a few hours. The most recent replacement was performed by a different technician. Service was scheduled for the same day. He was initially here to trouble shoot a repair from the previous week that did not help save the unit as we had hoped. This replacement took a bit longer then my previous replacement as he had to return to the shop for supplies he did not have on the truck. The tech was authorized to reduce the cost of the replacement by a few hundred dollars (approximately 1/2 of repair bill) due to the failed attempt to baby along the old unit only a week prior, which helped a little. Currently awaiting building inspection to complete the job.
I have used Hawthorne for four years now. I have had annual a/c, furnace, and plumbing inspections. Our home was a foreclosure so we were not sure how well maintained the major systems were. The technicians that come to my home are in uniform and are neat and clean. They are respectful of my home, always wearing boot covers on their shoes even when I say it is not necessary. Dealing with the office is also very professional. I have, on two occasions, phoned before 'normal' office hours and been greeted by a friendly voice. I believe they have an answering service for after hours. On these occasions, the office returned my call promptly and scheduled same day service.
I feel they may be a little pricey, however, I have not shopped around. I was originally referred to Hawthorne by our home warranty company shortly after moving in. I have continued with them and not shopped around based on their overall service. Why mess with a good thing! I received 2 estimates for service and Premier's was about $500 less. I saw examples of their work and was satified that while the building wasn't new nor had a nice waiting room, the quality of work was good. The estimate was based on a call to a used parts shop for the replacement window. I didn't make up my mind immediately, so when I called to confirm my decision, they set up an appointment. On the day I was planning to take the vehicle in, they called and asked if they could come to the house to pick it up. That was very welcomed since I was calling for a friend to meet me there. The work was completed when they said it would, and no sign of the dent was visible. The paint matched perfectly. I asked if the quote was infact the final cost since they were hoping to get a less expensive window from another source. The window promised to them was actually the incorrect one, and they ended up paying more for the window. The quote price was less than the cost, but the quote price was all they asked. I put myself on a budget and originally had decided to put it together myself. The more I thought about it the more I thought that a few hundred extra to have a \"professional\" put it together would be worth it. I was doing some searches on Craigslist and found a local man who had some already assembled 350 engines and so I hit him up wondering if we could make a deal on a trade of some sort. He told me just to bring my parts out and he would give me an idea of what it would cost to have it all put together. Right off the bat I had the wrong block, that was my fault for not making sure of what I had so he had to hunt a block down for me. That cost me $150 on top of what I thought that I was going to spend, but again that was my fault. So it seemed to take him forever to put this engine together, it was atleast a couple of months. I figured given that amount of time that I would have a pretty sweet running engine. So I finally got the call and he said it was ready to pick up and I made an appointment to go get it. I pulled in and nobody was home. I waited for over an hour, I called his cell quite a few times without an answer. Come to find out his daughter had had an accident, but didn't care enough about my little project to take half a minute to let me know what was going on. He didn't care that he was wasting my time as I stood out in the cold waiting around for him. So I waited around for him for over an hour for him to get back because he lives at least 25 miles from me. So I got my engine and was prepping it to put it in my jeep when I discovered that there was an exhaust manifold bolt broken off in the engine. This had to be removed in order for me to install the exhaust correctly. He had been bragging the entire time I was working with him of how he has 25 years of experience and an associates degree in applied science for this stuff. You would figure that he would at least notice and take care of a problem such as a broken off bolt. He is certainly more equipped to do it than I am, he owns a machine shop for heaven's sake! So I called him on it, he had no apology and said I quote, \"drill baby drill.\" He had no intention of helping me out with what should have already been taken care of. It took me an entire day if not more to get it fixed with what little equipment that I own to do such a task, that is why I took it to the \"professional\" to begin with! So my engine was finally ready to put in, it went in without a hitch and I got it started and ran it long enough at the proper RPMs to break in the camshaft. After I had everything where it needed to be and ready to run it down the road I started to notice that the engine had a noise that didn't seem right for a new rebuild. IT WAS KNOCKING! I couldn't believe it. I called him up and told him that it had a noise, in his normal condescending tone he proceeded to tell me that it was probably an exhaust leak or that I had a vacuum leak causing the engine to ping. I have been around engines for long enough to know that this was not the case. He had overlooked something or cut corners and thought that I would never notice because he thinks that everyone around him are complete rookies with engines. It is just my gut feeling that he purposely cut a corner to save him a few bucks. I didn't want to pull the engine very badly without having him listen to it. He by no means offered to come out and have a listen even though it was his build and his reputation to save. So I called him up and told him that I was going to drive it to town and I wanted to have him listen to it. He tinkered around with it and hastily and seemingly annoyed told me that \"this engine has to come out.\" It was his fault that it was knocking yet he made it my problem, the thought I am sure never crossed his mind that it should be his responsibility to take my engine out this time since it was his incompetence that caused it to need to be pulled in the first place. I gritted my teeth and smiled and told him that I would have it out to him asap. He took it apart and looked it over and assured me that there was nothing wrong with it. He even told me that he took it down to another machine shop for a second opinion. This I am highly doubting that he did. I think that he told me this just so that I wouldn't go out and get my own second opinion and have them find something wrong. He told me just to put it back in and run it. If something happened he would try and make it right. He gave me my engine back in pieces, I told him that I did not appreciate it one bit. Again it was his fault that it needed taken apart in the first place, why should I have to put parts of it back together? Not only that but he misplaced some of the bolts I needed and I had to go get new ones and he failed to give me back my oil dipstick. This man is very unorganized, careless, and unprofessional. He cares nothing about customers and their time or money. My engine still knocks and drives me insane. He has offered to put me a new engine together if I would pay for parts he would charge me very little in labor. Why should I have to pay him anything to get my engine fixed correctly? He does not stand behind his work in the least bit. If he was worried about his reputation or a good businessman at all he would have pulled my engine and made it right even if he had to take a little bit of a loss on the deal. He has no standards at all. He has a filthy mouth, he cusses like a sailor. He is disrespectful. I just called him up today to clarify a few things on another unrelated project. I brought up my engine and he started to get heated and I think by the slip of his tongue he said, \" you couldn't afford to have that engine built right.\" The way I took it is that he was telling me that since I told him I was trying to stay on a budget he cut as many corners as he could just to get me an engine that runs even though it was not done correctly. After some more heated words from him and him interrupting me constantly he hung up on me. He is a swindler and a con artist in my book. I would not use this man for any mechanical project whatsoever."},"url":"https://www.angi.com/companylist/us/id/twin-falls/askew-machine-and-perfomance-jeff-askew-south-side-reviews-2336359.htm"},"position":10}]}

"A costly mistake! This was not a good experience. Armando s mismanagement and refusal to rectify the issues was extremely disappointing. This job quickly went south once we started to point out the construction defects and damages â his crew had caused; damaged property, compromised existing radiant ceiling heating, damaged personal item (furniture, appliances, clothing, etc..) poor workmanship, and a complete disregard for the trust we offered them with our home (see photos). It started by CSCàs team mistakenly tearing out the subflooring unnecessarily and not replacing it. Followed by Armando scheduling a sub-contractor to install flooring without sub-flooring. Once the flooring was installed it became obvious that the height and spacing for the cabinet, trim, and door installations was off due to no sub-flooring. We pointed this out to Armando, and he attempted to remedy the situation through short cuts with disastrous results. The flooring was now poorly installed leaving gaps, hallow spots, uneven sections and large spacing between cabinetry, walls, and brickwork. The only solutions being to replace the damaged flooring with the original professional installation standards with sub-flooring in place (see photos), but this Armando did not want to pay for. Next, we realize both bedrooms radiant ceiling heat had been damaged. These components were damaged by CSC mismanagement of ceiling fan installations. Armando ignored questions regarding their state once the fans were installed. We did not get an honest answer until we pressured Armando into bring in an Electrician we knew was licensed. It was at this point we realized that all our plumbing and electrical work had been completed by unlicensed, uncertified, and unskilled individuals. We ask for permits and licenses for the plumbing and electrical work completed, but Armando has yet to supply them. Sadly, due to the circumstance we were in we had already given Armand a large percentage of the estimate and felt forced to continue working with him. I will not even start with the three attempts at finishing the bathroom (please see photos). We have voiced our concerns to Armando. His response was to offer a payment for the necessary repairs to the radiant heating by his insurance and pay for the flooring to be replaced. In exchange he demanded we sign a full release of liability document for all work completed. As you can understand, this was not in our best interest as the totality of the potential long-term damages this company may have caused is at this point undetermined. Without a full inspection we cannot be sure and with no permits pulled we cannot get an inspection. In short, we have spent over $20,000 to repair the damages caused by Armando mismanagement. So far, the project remains incomplete. Armando refuses to contact us via email or text. Very disappointing. I understand that mistakes are made, and nothing is perfect. But, by the way this company handled its mistakes and continues to hide behind ambiguous contracts and vague promises I cannot recommend them. If you choose to hire this company, do not sign anything that you have not shown to lawyers, get everything in writing EVERYTHING!. Beware of potential costly outcomes!"

Read reviews to supplement any word-of-mouth recommendations. Check sources like Angi that have standards and criteria in place to screen the pros it lists can also help you find more reputable local home builders.
