"I contacted them with very little notice before they were needed for a job (finding an electrician was not on my list of duties to address, but someone forgot to take care of it), and they were able to get in on the second day of the project and get everything squared away. They understood what we wanted done, and made it happen. Will definitely use them again for our next electrical project."

"I had a terrible situation. I had 2 Ames electrical companies turn down the Job as too big. Custom Electrical accepted the job, and Katy, the office person, began to coordinate arrangements with the City of Ames, as well as a boring company, taking me out of the middle of it all. Thank you Katy!!! Rogan, the electrician, spent a great deal of time with me is assessing the situation, was conscientious in all his dealings, and very courteous. Custom Electric made a very stressful situation much easier for me. They will get all my electrical work in the future."

"Angus with Magic Electric is the man. There really is no project too big for him and his team to tackle. We had a 350lb Chandelier hung 17 feet in the air, Angus welcomed the challenge with open arms and made it happen. His work looks fantastic and he and his team are second to none. I would highly recommend Magic Electric to anyone who needs work and will gladly use them in the future. Thanks again Angus!"

Small jobs welcome

"Madison County Renovations did a fantastic job on our project! We had concrete buried in our yard (from road construction or home construction), causing our grass and trees to die. The crew did a great job removing concrete, re-leveling our yard, and planting grass seed. The crew was quick and did a great job cleaning up. Besides no grass in the area of excavation, you would never even know they were there. Mark, the owner, was also kind enough to fix our sliding glass door that was sticking/not shutting well. Overall, I would highly recommend Maddison County Renovations."

"They were great to work with. Dana completely understood my project and sent me a very fair bid the next day. The work was completed the following week, exactly as promised. Dean and AJ were great; very knowledgeable and friendly. I will definitely call Jensen with future electrical needs."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Most household circuits can handle about 70 strings of 50 standard mini lights, or up to 600 strings of LED lights, which consume less power than the incandescent variety. Make sure to factor in any appliances also running on the circuit.

If you’re interested in exploring other avenues to completely upgrade your electrical panel, it’s also possible to add a sub-panel, which is a smaller panel that connects to what you currently have in place. This way, you can add additional circuits without having to swap out your main panel.

For most applications, you won’t need a neutral for 240V. There are certain codes and regulations that differ between areas so just because you technically may not need one in order for the device to function properly, it may still be a local requirement. Professionals in your area know the requirements, which is just another reason to hire one instead of taking on a project that is frankly not very DIY-friendly.

It’s a great idea to replace and update outlets, especially if an outlet stops working. New outlets work well with modern appliances and devices. Over time, outlets become old and worn—they can even become damaged, cracked, and burnt if the wiring is old and outdated. Old outlets and wiring can cause smoke, sparks, flickering lights, and an electrical fire.

Dehumidifiers typically use 300 to 700 watts of electricity per hour, whereas portable dehumidifiers use about 40 watts per hour. The exact amount of electricity your dehumidifier will generate depends on its capacity and energy efficiency. Generally, higher-capacity dehumidifiers generate more electricity than lower-capacity units, but they also usually have better energy efficiency over the long run.
