"We called Hawkeye Exterminators to help with a maggot infestation resulting from a dead animal on the roof of our home. The animal had been removed for a few days but the problem persisted, which is quite usettling and gross! Before I searched Angie's List for Pest Control I had contacted a chain company for animal control but did not think I was on the right track. Mr. Rhinehart answered my initial call directly and scheduled me the same day. He surveyed the roof area involved and identified the source of our ongoing concern, cleaning away and spraying accordingly. After the more acute problem was addressed, at our request he made a more routine application to the exterior of our home for spiders. We appreciate the professional, courteous and timely service - we will depend on this company for future needs.

Pest Control questions, answered by experts

There’s no denying the striking resemblance, but squash bugs are different from the brown marmorated stink bug. While both are shield-shaped and emit a foul odor when crushed, they belong to different insect families and target different plants. Squash bugs primarily attack squash, pumpkins, and other cucurbits, while stink bugs have a much broader range of host plants, including fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants. Their eggs and feeding damage also differ, making proper identification key for effective pest control.

What smell do squash bugs hate?

Once the animals and their young are out of the house, remove the nest and locate any entry points. Some may be difficult to find because some animals can fit through very small holes. Once you’ve located as many entry points as possible, use materials such as metal or masonry to block off the entry. Ideally, you should choose materials that most animals cannot chew through. Create a one-way door or flap to allow animals to leave but not return. Additional methods include using repellants designed to make an area unappealing to the types of animals that find your home so inviting.

While it may seem counterintuitive, it is best to continue sleeping in your bed even if you have a bed bug infestation. If you move to another room, the bed bugs may follow you, which can spread the infestation to other parts of your home. To minimize bites while you sleep, wear protective clothing that covers as much of your body as possible, such as long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks. In the meantime, you should also isolate any potentially infested belongings and take steps to kill the bed bugs on your mattress as quickly as possible while waiting for professional treatment.

Stink bugs can start reproducing a couple of weeks after they leave the nymph stages, which gives them several months to mate and start laying eggs. A single stink bug can lay up to 400 eggs in a lifetime, which can worsen an infestation. Stink bugs lay significantly more eggs in warmer climates where they stay active longer and have several rounds of egg laying.

Yes, it’s safe to sleep in a house with termites. They don’t bite or spread disease and they aren’t likely to crawl on you or invade your personal space. However, termites can cause serious structural damage over time, which may compromise your home’s safety if left untreated. If you suspect an infestation, it’s best to schedule a professional inspection and treatment to prevent long-term risks to your property (not to mention your peace of mind).
