"I used Scott's Home Renewal for a first floor renovation about three years ago, was pleased and hired them again for this. Not the cheapest contractor, but definitely the best I have used here. First class professionals; first rate subs, especially the tile and glass people The custom glass door arrived with the wrong specs, and the glass contractor got the factory to make a new one with only one day of waiting.. If you want it done right, contact Scott's."
"Overall it went well. With any project in a home, one runs into a few glitches, but were taken care of. Had good suggestions for updates at reasonable costs. Hired 3rd party contractors that did quality work. Received positive comments."
"deWit Construction & Remodeling went well above and beyond my wife's and my expectations! We had spent countless hours designing our large custom home addition that consisted of vaulted upper level ceilings, 3 bedrooms (2 guest and 1 master with a large walk-in closet), 3 bathrooms with custom showers, 2 offices, 1 huge 'Great Room', 1 large entry / mud room, 1 storage room, and 1 large 3-car garage. We then decided that we wanted to do much of the work ourselves, taking on the responsibility of General Contractor for the project, and hiring sub-contractors to complete segments of the project that we weren't equipped to handle on our own. To say this was a massive undertaking would be a gross understatement. Locating quality sub-contractors was one very tall hurdle that we hadn't taken into consideration during the planning phase. We found that they were few and far between, that many we were able to locate wanted to charge an arm-and-leg for 'custom' work (well outside of our budget), and that some were straight up unreliable and deceitful. Our previous framing sub-contractor had left a bitter taste with us, so we practiced great diligence in selecting our next. (Note: Long story short, we had to take our previous framing sub-contractor to court in order to recover our down payment due to zero work being completed and multiple promises broken and deadlines missed.) We were pleasantly surprised when we met and spoke with Neil deWit about our project and desires for the work that his crew would be preforming. Neil was very professional in taking the time to listen to and talk with us about the project layout, time-frame and budget, etc. Once we chose to go with deWit C & R, it wasn't long before his crew was onsite and working. We couldn't have asked for nicer, professional guys to have working on our property. We didn't notice any yelling or profanity. They always dressed well and their equipment was always clean and well maintained, and put away at the end of the day. Oh, and their craftsmanship was second to none. Earlier we mentioned some homeowner design flaws that deWit C & R encountered; well they tackled them head on and found creative ways to make everything work. Most 1st level wall studs had to be individually measured and cut due to fluctuations in the concrete foundation and floor. Wall, door and window locations and dimensions had to be altered in order to make our design work without drastically changing our initial layout. Everything was communicated with us very well by the head carpenter on the project and Neil, and we were involved in all major change decisions. It was awesome to see our project being fleshed out in front of our very eyes and knowing that it was being built with such great quality craftsmanship. We wanted to roof the existing structure and the addition at the same time, so as soon as the deWit C & R crew had finished nailing down the roof sheeting, we went to work on removing the worn out shingles from the existing roof. We had an old dump truck that was on its last leg, which we began using for catching the old shingles. We could barely get and keep it running. The next morning, the deWit C & R head carpenter show up pulling one of their nice dump trailers and asked me if we wanted to use it at no extra charge. We were blown away! We couldn?t be happier with how things turned out. We officially have our dream home and we owe a ton of credit to deWit Construction and Remodeling! We honestly don?t think we could have completed it without their experience, professionalism and willingness to work with us within our budget. There isn?t a single design modification that we are unhappy with, and the structure is super straight, solid, quiet and water tight. We can?t say enough good things about deWit Construction and Remodeling. We?re happy to drop their name anytime we learn of an upcoming local project. "

"My husband and I had spent 13 years remodeling our 1873 house by ourselves. When it came time to do our dream project of adding a sunroom, finding a contractor to do the work instead of doing it ourselves was a very important decision to us. We met with several contractors and knew instantly that John and his son Nate at Addition Doctors were the people we wanted taking on this project. John and Nate were so great to work with. They were the only company we met with who gave us a computer generated model of what the project would look like so we had a very clear vision of the end product. They were the only company to quote us the project under the budget we told them we had to work with. They kept us up to date at every step of the project and there were never any surprises about cost or timing. They had great ideas for the project when we weren't exactly sure what should or could be done. We love our finished sunroom. The quality of work and service they gave was excellent. We would highly recommend Addition Doctors for anyone who is looking to have quality work done to their home."
"These guys were great to work with. They have completed two major projects for us this far in a kitchen backsplash install and remodel of a master and second bathroom. There was a slight mistake that they made with the master bath remodel, but they took full ownership of it and made it right. We have them quoting additional projects as well as I believe in having a contractor that I can trust. All of their team members are super professional, extremely nice and great to work with. Would certainly recommend this company!"
"This is the second small job I had for Des Moines Area Roofing. I called Tim who is always professional. I told him my handyman found pieces of a plastic collar on the ground. I asked him if he had a crew who could come out and inspect and repair all collars and seals around the collars. He found the time within the next two weeks. As it turned out most of the seals needed attention as did collars. The original roof job was over ten years old and the plastic used had been cracking. He replaced with metal and resealed. After inspection and repair was finished. Other debris from a nearby tree was removed. They were great fast and professional. Since my job was small, some contractors don't want to spend the time on it. Tim has always treated me like a million dollar customer. He says he likes small jobs like mine, he uses these jobs to keep his crews busy for a full day, keeping everyone happy."

"When I started researching companies that could finish my basement, I contacted 3. One never responded to my calls. Another contractor came out and talked with us. He said he would send us an estimate and we never heard from him again. Better Basements responded to my calls, came to my home promptly, and met with us for 30-45 minutes about our basement situation. They went over costs and options. They were very professional. They sent an estimate in a timely manner. We still aren't quite ready to begin this project, but when we do, we will be calling this company again. "
Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts
Yes, a one-story house can have a load-bearing wall. The load-bearing walls in a single-story home are usually the exterior walls. If the house has a basement with exposed walls, the arrangement of the beams can help indicate what walls are load-bearing.
When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.
When building a house, it is customary to use 16d nails that measure 3 1/2 inches in length to construct the frame. These nails are crucial in providing the necessary support and stability for structural elements like joists and studs, which ensures a sturdy framework.
Framing is the shell of the house. It includes several steps, including studs, plumbing, and electricity. A professional will ensure the wall frame is secured for the house’s structural integrity.
Framing prices change depending on the material and whether the wall is load-bearing. Most contractors use wood to frame a home, but metal is another popular choice.
Bow windows need support because they are large and extend out from the exterior wall of the home. Bow windows may extend 1 foot to several feet from the outside of the home, so you’ll need to provide additional support to handle this weight. A window contractor will be able to provide the proper amount of support for your new bow window.
