"They couldn't deliver, they specified items that after months of waiting, they could never deliver. In the mean time, they directed me to have plumbing rough and done, and then when they couldn't deliver the system for which the plumbing was done, I now have to spend several thousand dollars having the plumbing redone for another system that I found out on my own. The design was okay, some of their ideas were spot on, some of them were way off but ultimately they just couldn't deliver after holding $10,000 of my money for over 2 months. Most plumbers working on your home’s plumbing will be journey-level plumbers.
It’s usually best to hire a certified master plumber to perform plumbing work in your home. Certified plumbers will be able to tackle most plumbing jobs and will have experience with drainage problems, water supply pipes, and appliances. This type of plumber is the most expensive, but the price is well worth it. You could opt for a journeyperson or an apprentice, which will be more affordable, but the reduced experience means your repair may not be as high-quality. Avoid hiring a handyperson for plumbing work unless you’re dealing with a simple issue, like a clog or a leaky faucet.
Most toilets have a 12-inch rough-in or hole, but some have 10- or 14-inch holes, which means that not all toilets fit all setups. Knowing how to measure the rough-in is essential, so you purchase a toilet that fits the existing drain hole. It can be costly to have the rough-in moved, and most stores don’t accept toilet returns.
A two-way cleanout can help if there’s already a clog, but the best strategy to prevent one is by not rinsing grease, oil, or fat down your drains, not flushing or rinsing coffee grounds or egg shells down your drains, flushing only human waste and toilet paper (so no diapers, period products, bathroom wipes, or paper towels), and using drain guards on all of your drains.
You’ll need two sizes of pipe to plumb a bathroom. You’ll use a 1/2-inch pressure pipe for your supply lines that run from the fixture to the larger 3/4-inch supply lines that run through the house.
