He started with repairing and refinishing antiques, eventually moving into building furniture; after much hard work, he became well known throughout the Midwest for designing and building unique, world-class pieces. In 1985 David received his BA in Industrial Psychology from Morningside College, graduating summa cum laude. David worked with John Bradshaw after John's groundbreaking series On the Family appeared on Public Television. Working alongside John, David put on workshops throughout the U.S. In 1989 David was the executive producer of a ten-hour series on addictions called Contrary to Love, produced for Public Television. During this time, David maintained his shop and continued to produce high-end custom built furniture. Working in television production whetted David's appetite and ambitions, and during that time he began thinking about the show that became Working on Antiques. If you spill wood refinishing oil, wipe up the liquid quickly without spreading the stain and then use soap and water or a stain remover to get rid of the spot. Since the product is oil based, using a detergent like dish soap or a thinner like mineral spirits will help take out the stain. You may need to repeat this process multiple times to remove the stain.

Stay away from using window cleaners and other harsh cleaning solutions on antique wood—or any wood in your home for that matter. The pH of the cleaners can break down the finish and permanently damage and stain the wood below. Even when it comes to more durable areas, such as when cleaning your baseboards, only use cleaning solutions that are safe for porous materials. 

Yes. A good mixture to condition your leather is made from one tablespoon of natural baby soap, a splash of vinegar, and 2 cups of warm water. Mix these ingredients in a bowl and use a microfiber cloth to rub it into the leather in small circles. 

You can apply the same technique with a mixture of one part vinegar and two parts linseed oil. Once you’ve applied this to leather with a cloth, let it sit for 10 minutes before buffing with a small cloth.

Applying a topcoat sealer is not required, but it will keep the stain from fading over time. This is particularly important if the stain imparts a color or varnish. If you’re staining exterior wood, you should apply a sealant or finish to prevent weather-related issues down the line. Also, stained wood that lacks a seal won’t look as clean and fresh. A clear topcoat will give it the professional result you want.
