Jeff Craig is the third generation owner of Globe Siding, Insulation & Window Co., carrying on a tradition of providing reliable, personal service to homeowners in north-central Iowa. His focus is on educating his customers about the high quality products and application techniques he provides to enhance their home.

"Stay away from this company at all costs. We hired Globe Siding and Insulation & Window Co. to put in insulation in the fall of 2018 at a cost of almost $5,000. A little more than a year later, there was considerable black mold and wet insulation in our ceiling. The subsequent contractor we hired to remodel our apartment said the insulation was improperly installed. In fact, he said didn't even put in as much insulation as we paid for. I should have had a clue this guy was bad news when he made me pay to add a 220 volt circuit for his equipment. Our building has a flat roof, and we should have been told that loose-fill insulation in a flat roof could cause condensation resulting in black mold. Ultimately we had to tear down the ceiling and re-insulate using spray foam insulation (which we should have used) at a cost of almost $19,000. So almost $5,000 for his fault work and another $19,000 - nearly $25,000 wasted! When confronted, the owner said he accepted no responsibility, wouldn't honor the warranty (that had expired only a couple of months prior) and wouldn't even offer to make good in any way. In fact, when I said he should have told us about the risk, he said "buyer beware"... Buyer beware!? How many people know anything about insulation? The reason you hire an expert is for their knowledge and expertise. In any event, stay far away from this guy and his company - Globe Siding, Insulation & Window Co."

Drywall Insulation questions, answered by experts

Fiberglass is considered dangerous only if your skin comes into contact with it or if you breathe in any fiberglass particles. This is because fiberglass is literally made of tiny fibers of glass that can cut your skin and your organs. While there aren’t many long-term effects, it’s still important to take all the proper safety precautions when working with fiberglass.

2x4 walls can hold R-13 or R-15 batts of insulation, which is usually about 3.5 inches thick. You should also check with your local building codes to see if there’s a required thickness you need to adhere to.

You can also use R-value maps to determine the best thickness and ratings for where you live. For example, someone in Texas doesn’t need as thick of insulation as someone in Montana. Energy Star has a good one you can reference.

The best type of attic insulation depends on where you live, your budget, and what stage of construction the attic is in. For example, if you're building a house, then structural insulated panels are a worthy investment since they're easy to install during construction and they're the most energy-efficient type of insulation.

Additionally, if you live in a very warm climate, then you can potentially save quite a bit of money by opting for reflective insulation, which is more affordable than comprehensive insulation but doesn't work well for cool climates. Blown-in, loose-fill, and spray foam insulation are all great options for attics in moderate climates.

Avoid sleeping in a house immediately after spray foam insulation is applied due to the off-gassing of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These fumes can cause respiratory irritation, headaches, and other health issues. It’s recommended to wait 24 to 72 hours after installation to allow the foam to fully cure and the fumes to dissipate. The exact time frame depends on the type of spray foam used and the ventilation during the application, but your installation pro can advise you on the best timeline.

For a truly DIY solution to protect your outdoor faucets from freezing, you can craft your own faucet sock out of spare rags, plastic shopping bags, and duct tape—but this method might not be as effective (or attractive) as store-bought. If you choose to DIY your own outdoor faucet cover, be aware that rags, old towels, and other fabric you might use to wrap the faucet can absorb water like a sponge and could cause problems if it freezes.
