... My business is registered with the state of Hawaii. I carry $2 million general liability insurance. I have been in the construction trades for 43 years and on Hawaii Island for 18 years. In my earlier years, I spent four years in the Hawaii Carpenter Apprenticeship Training Program on Oahu and attended Honolulu community college. I normally submit written estimates for larger jobs. For smaller jobs, I can give a verbal estimate so my client has an idea as to costs before the work proceeds. I require payment when the work is complete to my customer's satisfaction unless agreed upon otherwise. I only require an up front deposit for the materials when they exceed $300. For projects outside the scope of my licenses, I partner with a HI licensed general contractor and have references from the top Big Island property managers and private clients.

"John did a fabulous job, did a lot of repairs, our house looks awesome!"

Carpet Installation questions, answered by experts

Carpet typically lasts 5-15 years, depending on material quality and traffic levels. Regular maintenance, such as professional cleaning, can extend carpet longevity and preserve appearance.

If the installer is unwilling to fix the problems and you’re not interested in seeking remediation, you could hide a visually unpleasant floor. This will only work if the floor is structurally sound and the only issue you have is the way it looks. The easiest way to do this is to use large area rugs. You can also paint the floor, although that’s a labor-intensive job if you want to go the DIY route.

It is normal to glue carpet down, though it’s not the only or the most popular method of installing carpet. Modern techniques include tack strips and stretching the carpet, but you might still find glued carpet in older homes or a home with a DIY’d past. Removing a glued-down carpet will be harder compared to other methods of installation.

A 65-oz. carpet is good, and in many cases, it indicates a premium carpet. Most carpets for homes should fall in the range of 40 to 60 ounces for face weight. If a carpet has a 65-oz. face weight, it is likely more durable and long-lasting than a similar carpet with a lower face weight. Carpet face weight is just one factor in determining a carpet’s quality.

If you want your carpet to last as long as possible, then yes, you need to install carpet padding. Carpet padding creates a layer of protection between the back of your carpet and the floor beneath it, which decreases friction and reduces wear and tear. Aside from that, carpet padding also helps absorb noise and makes your carpet feel more comfortable underfoot.
