You can and should vent the gas from your hot water heater to the outside of your home. Traditionally, these gases were vented back to other gas appliances, like stoves or furnaces, but many jurisdictions have outlawed this practice due to the risks it provides.

A leaking water heater could potentially last for a few weeks or months before you need to repair it. However, it's not advisable to wait too long. In fact, a conventional boiler works best if your home already has a water heater system in place. Sometimes a boiler can be combined with indirect water heaters. When replacing an old unit, you might want to switch from a gas water heater to an electric water heater or vice versa. To do this, you will likely need to add infrastructure to the area. For example, you likely don’t have a gas line that served your old electric water heater. You’d have to call a plumber to put in a new gas line. If you’re replacing a gas unit with an electric one, the plumber will need to safely cap the old gas line. You will then need an electrician to add wiring for the new electric unit.

Your water heater's age can affect your homeowners' insurance policy. Many policies will ask how old the heater is when you first apply for a policy—and they may make you replace a model that's over 10 years old. 

Even if your policy permits you to have an older heater, it may significantly reduce the amount of protection available. If an older water heater suddenly leaks and causes damage to parts of your home, your policy may not cover it.
