"The workmanship was excellent. Mr. Phillips was one of the most responsive contractors we have worked with. He has assembled subcontractors who know their trade and can perform the work with skill and to code. He supervised their work and made sure that the work was done to the highest level. We relied on his services since we were traveling out of state in preparation for moving into the house and he met the deadline! We are more than pleased with his work and would highly recommend him to anyone. He is an excellent contractor and we are very glad to have found his company."

"I hired Chris Simms to come to my house to fix an outlet and old worn wire on the wall behind my stove. He did a fantastic job. He was on time, fast and super pleasant and the job price was affordable.....and he came out on the day of the bad weather of wintery mix snowfall. He was very nice, professional and his rates were reasonable. Thumbs Up!! Thanks so much Chris Simms. I will be calling you for future projects and fixes. I appreciate it."

"My AFS crew Mike Truelove, Brady Webster and Chris Smith were great. They were professional, courteous, and took the time to explain anything I asked about. The crawl space under my house has always been a scary place that I would never ever go. Now that the crew has completed the drainage system, the floor supports and encapsulation, everything is so clean and bright, I may venture under there and admire their work. I will definitely suggest to all my friends and family to use AFS for all their foundation needs."

Subcontractors questions, answered by experts

If your project is complex, it may make sense to hire an architect to draw plans. An architect might also be a good person to hire if you want to ensure your plans adhere to building codes and regulations.

The best way to start designing a house is to know what you want before designing. Making a list of your biggest priorities in a home will help. Designing a house without an idea of what you need or want in a home will lead to many trials and errors that could make it harder to figure out what you need in your design.

Universal design costs can be minimal when you add them during construction; however, adding universal design principles to existing homes can sometimes increase renovation costs. For example, a mid-grade bathroom remodel is estimated to cost around $30,000, while a standard universal design remodel can cost closer to $40,000. Adding accessible design components can include widening hallways ($500 to $2,000), curbless showers ($2,000 to $8,000), and widening doors ($400 to $800). Keep in mind that these increased costs can lead to higher resale values because universal homes may appeal to a wider variety of buyers.

Hiring a contractor with knowledge about historic renovations and reviewing their previous work is important. You can find a historic home renovation contractor by calling your local historic preservation office, historical society, or any local historic museums nearby. The staff may have suggestions for specialized contractors who have worked for them. You can also ask them about historic home restorations that you have seen and liked in your area to get recommendations for pros.

Structural engineers draw structural plans, which include detailed drawings of the structural components of a home only. Complete house plans will require additional work from an architect or draftsperson, whose drawings will take the structural drawings into account. They’ll also include more details about the finishing materials and layout of a home, including everything from roofing and flooring materials to the position of furniture, light fixtures, switches, and plumbing fixtures.
