The repairs look solid and the deck feels much safer and better than before. Communication was clear throughout the process, and the final result exceeded expectations. "We have our 20 plus year old deck repaired for the first time recently by Fine Southern Renovations and we are very impressed by both the repair work and service men Lance and Sam. From the estimating stage, lance gave us the impression of very friendly, professional and skillful. The repair scheme he submitted addressed the structural problem and our needs without incurring too much cost. So we selected him for the work among other competing quotes. He scheduled us for an early weekend repair due to our urgent needs without charging extra cost. During the repair, he followed the engineered scheme and also improvised innovative solutions to address new problems. Needless to say, we are very happy with the results and would like to share our experience here. Moreover, we would like to say thank you again to both Lance and Sam for a wonderful job during this special Thanksgiving moment. We will definitely call him again for other repairs in the future and strongly recommend others to try them out. Susan/Paul Nov 23, 2023"

"Very honest and recommended structure changes without me pointing them out. We refurbished a rear 2nd story deck originally installed by the builder. Great experience, Chris, Zack and Dillon were polite and worked efficiently. I would strongly recommend CRS!"

"Overall good work, although it hasn't been tested yet with rain. While doing the job they were hired for, they found that I needed support beams for a collapsing wall, which was fine. But while installing beam, they cut a huge hole across the ceiling of one room to install and wanted me to pay extra to repair the whole they cut. ******update they did come and fix the issue but it took a month to fix*******"

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Yes, pressure washing a wood deck can be a good idea as it effectively lifts ingrained dirt, mold, and mildew, improving the deck's appearance and longevity. However, it must be done carefully, as it's easy to damage the wood, especially softwoods. To pressure wash safely, use a lower pressure setting and a wide, 40-degree fan pattern nozzle (often white). Keep the nozzle at least a foot away from the wood surface and maintain constant motion, avoiding hovering in one spot to prevent gouging.

Yes, you can build a pool deck yourself, but it takes precision, a lot of time, and many specific tools. You’ll need to create a deck plan, be careful with measurements, cut each piece of wood, secure the pieces properly, and ensure the deck meets building codes. Building a deck around a pool is a rewarding DIY, but it’s time- and labor-intensive, so thoughtfully consider your abilities and the time you have before embarking on this DIY.

Typically, most residential wooden decks are designed to support approximately 40 pounds per square foot, including the deck’s weight and any items placed on it. While this is fine for typical use, it is usually not enough to hold the weight of a hot tub filled with water and people. To safely support a hot tub, your wood deck will likely require reinforcement. Therefore, it’s best to have a contractor or a structural engineer assess it before hot tub installation.

Yes, it’s definitely possible to build a pergola on an existing deck. All you need to do is attach the pergola support beams to the deck’s joists and build up from there. Beware that mistakes can damage your deck, so if you’re at all unsure of the process, play it safe and hire a pro for your custom build.

The overhang, or nosing, of deck steps is another area that will be covered in building code requirements. The noses on your deck steps should have a minimum overhang of ¾ inch. For safety, usability, and code compliance, the nosing of deck steps should not extend past 1¼ inches.
