"Overall good work, although it hasn't been tested yet with rain. While doing the job they were hired for, they found that I needed support beams for a collapsing wall, which was fine. But while installing beam, they cut a huge hole across the ceiling of one room to install and wanted me to pay extra to repair the whole they cut. ******update they did come and fix the issue but it took a month to fix*******"

"Richard and his team did a great job. Did job in less time than he said it would take. Refurbished my entire deck. Tore up entire deck floor, decking boards and replaced them with 2x6x16' pressure treated, replaced top cap 2x8 all around and rebuilt 8 foot wide steps up to sliding glass doors. Had to reinforce some 2x10 floor joist where carpenter ants destroyed. First class job. Wife loves it. Happy wife, Happy Life!"

"Dixon Construction provided a professional and speedy service when repairing my deck. I couldnâ t have asked for a better company. The company also pointed out other issues that I wasnâ t aware with my property and went above and beyond to provide great customer service. Most importantly, the company was honest, did not cut corners, and considered my families needs to complete the job."

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Yes, snow should be removed from a deck to protect it from damage caused by moisture and heavy loads. Shovel the snow off of your deck regularly once it is more than four inches deep. Avoid using salt, which can damage your deck.

Yes, it is possible to add an under-deck drainage system to an existing deck by retrofitting it to the structure. This process may require some prep work. For example, many drainage systems are installed on top of the deck joists, which would require you to remove the decking boards and railings first. To avoid this, you could opt for a below-the-joist drainage system. For best results and to ensure proper installation, it is recommended to consult a professional. A pro can inspect your deck, make any necessary repairs, and then install the drainage system correctly.

A deck doesn’t have to be perfectly level. Many pros even recommend a gentle slope to ensure proper drainage and increase longevity. The ideal gentle slope is about 1/8 to 1/4 inch per foot away from the property, leading water away from the home to prevent pooling and reduce the risk of damage. It also minimizes rot, mold, and other moisture-related problems.

You can add a roof to most decks, but you need to have it inspected first. If your deck didn’t come with a roof initially, it may not be able to handle the weight without some structural changes. You can add additional supports to your existing deck to safely add a roof, and tying your deck’s roof to an exterior wall can help add some structural stability, but remember these aren’t DIY projects and need to be left to a pro.

Most building codes require that railing spindles (also known as balusters) on decks or stairs be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard is often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' which means a sphere with a 4-inch diameter should not be able to pass through the opening between balusters. This rule is in place to prevent small children and pets from slipping through the railing. For the same reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck or floor surface should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is essential to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.
