"Calvin and his crew worked their magic turning our dark, scary basement into a bright, beautiful apartment for my aging mother who recently moved in with us. Even though we already had an idea of the floor plan we wanted, Calvin made some design suggestions, such as adding a pony wall to incorporate a support beam. This addition gave the apartment a separate office space which my mother loves! If any issues arose during construction, Calvin addressed concerns quickly and satisfactorily. He was easy to contact via phone call, text, or email, and he responded immediately. He and his whole crew were professional, and their attention to detail was exceptional. My mother can’t wait to move into her new apartment, just in time for the holidays! We couldn’t be happier with the work of MWR, LLC!"

"We hired to remodel our guest bathroom due to a leak. All went well and completed in a timely manner. Very professional and patient (changed my mind last minute on floor tile pattern...and grout), but still able to get it done. Bathroom looked great!"

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

Efficient appliance positioning, optimizing existing plumbing, and sourcing energy-efficient materials reduce financial impact and increase sustainability.

It’s less expensive to finish your basement than it is to build an addition to your home. The average cost to refinish a basement is $32,000 (between $7 and $23 per square foot) while building an addition to your home costs $50,325 ($80 to $210 per square foot). Depending on the size of your basement and other factors, like moving plumbing and electrical, refinishing a basement is a more cost-effective option in most cases.

When considering finishing your basement, take into account a few pros and cons:

Pros

  • Can increase the value of your home

  • Separate space from the rest of the house

  • Customize and personalize the basement to suit your needs and style

  • Increase the amount of living space in your home

Cons

  • May not regain enough value to cover the cost of finishing

  • Lack of natural light if it’s below ground level

  • Moisture or flooding can cause costly damage

  • Installing plumbing and electrical can be messy and costly

Any bowing in a basement wall indicates a problem that needs to be addressed by a professional. If your basement wall bows more than 1 inch, it's time for an inspection. Generally, a wall can bow up to 30% of its thickness (around 2.5 inches for an 8-inch-thick wall) before it becomes an urgent situation. Bowing of 2 to 4 inches is more straightforward to fix than bowing of more than 4 inches, which will require significant repairs. If the bowing is more than 6 inches, the wall will likely need to be replaced. The sooner you address the problem, the easier and less expensive the repair will be.

Save money on your basement finishing project by making cost-effective decisions such as minimizing structural changes and avoiding costly construction revisions. DIY simpler tasks such as painting or basic cleanup to reduce labor costs. You can also opt for energy-efficient fixtures and materials that may qualify for rebates or tax incentives.
