"(TL/DR: We are happy with the work Cory did, and I would recommend him for your landscaping needs.) The theme here is "all's well that ends well." Cory is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet, and he's very agreeable to work with. He and his crew work remarkably quickly, too, and the quality of work is very good. The job was not without its hiccups, though. Cory is not a proactive communicator, and that caused us some grief along the way. Without boring you with every detail, Cory and his crew got to work on Day 1, and by the end of Day 2, they had built an entire retaining wall on a line different from the one we'd talked about. He told me he had lain the foundation on Day 1 and, when he didn't hear from me, assumed it was correct and moved on to building the wall on Day 2. Problem is, he didn't inform me that I needed to review his Day 1 work (I never imagined that he would do the work differently than what we talked about when he met me for the initial estimate), or that he would interpret no word from me as acceptance of his work. The result was that he had to deconstruct the wall and then rebuild it along the correct line, which I'm sure was a lot of work, but he did it and did so cheerfully. This kerfuffle was unfortunately repeated, in essence, with the landscape stairs--building, followed by no word from him, followed by silence from me, followed by a discrepancy between what he built and what I wanted. This was especially frustrating, because, after the wall incident, he said he would take photos of the unfinished stairs and send them to me for approval before completing them. But, all's well that ends well: he and I met to discuss the issue, and then he and his crew redid the stairs to my satisfaction. To sum up, my experience with Cory is that he will make judgment calls, build, and hope it works out right rather than consulting you to see what you want and doing it that way (or telling you it can't be done that way for a particular reason). If you have a drawn plan that Cory can refer to, you may not have these issues, and perhaps I should have insisted on drawing him a plan when he didn't insist on having one before beginning work. Or, if you don't work during the day, you could oversee the work and give feedback as it's happening to prevent any issues from arising. But don't expect Cory to be proactive about communication. So, after all that, do I regret getting Cory to do the work? Absolutely not. He got it done quickly, did it well, did it for an excellent price, and went the extra mile to make sure we were happy. And we are. We are very excited about the way things turned out, and we can't wait to use the back yard space that Cory helped us create. I would absolutely recommend him."

Customers say: Quality work

Howard Landscape Company is a professional landscaping company that provides landscape management services to Chattanooga and surrounding areas.

"I will start by saying that some of the people working for Howard Landscaping do fantastic work. This review is of the professionalism and work quality of the owner, Chance Howard. Our project involved the installation of a water feature with waterfall. The first three attempts were an ugly mess of exposed orange and yellow foam, exposed liner, and interminable leaks. Chance Howard’s idea of showing up “in the morning” means he might show up sometime in the afternoon one day during the week, when he works for two or three hours. He does not give courtesy calls when he doesn’t show up when promised, but he does make frequent use of the weather as an excuse not to work, even when the sun is shining brightly. After taking a sledgehammer to a rock we specifically told him we wanted featured, we had to threaten a lawsuit to get a replacement rock. From the beginning, he left our site a mess with foam and garbage everywhere, including left in the pools for several days. He failed to return our garden hose to where he got it, and frequently asked for basic tools since he didn’t bother to bring them with him. With all the leaks in the water feature, the “colorful plant material” that was supposed to finish our project, was mostly crushed as rocks were moved to locate the various leaks. The plant material has not been replaced. The projected two week project has turned into a six week headache so far. I would not wish this disaster on anyone. The most recent rebuild looked great and sounded great, but now, 24 hours after turning it on, it’s already leaked a substantial amount of water leaving the bottom pool about a foot lower than it was yesterday this time. It seems we have yet more leaks. Given that more “repairs” to the liner and seams to the liner have been added than we could keep track of, I’m sorry, but not surprised."

Lawn Irrigation questions, answered by experts

Experts recommend aerating a lawn at least once a year. If you haven’t aerated your lawn recently, or if it has a significant amount of thatch buildup, you may need to aerate it twice annually for a few years. Keeping up with a regular aeration schedule helps ensure the long-term health of your yard.

Speeding up grass seed germination is possible, but it requires quite a bit of extra work and commitment. Keeping the soil moist is key, but here are a few other tried-and-true methods for growing your new grass as quickly as possible:

  • Mist grass up to eight times per day to keep the soil moist.

  • Purchase a moisture-retaining seed coating for your grass seeds.

  • Amend soil that is compacted or in the wrong pH range.

  • Choose the right grass seed for your area’s climate and soil conditions.

  • Avoid planting on windy days or during periods of extreme rain or drought.

Power seeding and aeration are both great ways to improve the health of your lawn, but one isn’t better than the other. Aeration alone doesn’t involve planting grass seeds; instead, this service is focused on improving soil health. Aeration is a great service to do before any type of seeding to make seeding more effective.

Yes, it's usually necessary to water the lawn after liquid aeration. Water helps activate the aeration product and distribute it evenly into the soil. Proper watering also aids in breaking down soil compaction and enhances the overall effectiveness of the treatment. Follow the recommended watering guidelines provided by the product manufacturer to ensure that your lawn receives the full benefits of liquid aeration and achieves the desired results.

In most cases, it is worth paying for professional lawn care. DIY lawn maintenance is possible, but it can get extremely time-consuming, especially to make your property look well-maintained. Not only is lawn maintenance time-intensive, but it can also get expensive, even to DIY, especially considering the cost of fuel and maintenance for your lawn care tools. Professional lawn care services average around $100 per service, making it a relatively inexpensive investment, especially for how much time it saves you.
