"Environmental Services of America took my call after 5 PM, and they came to my house two hours later. The company was the least expensive of the three I called, and gave me the fastest results. Elias Hernández looked at all my floors, and he only took samples of the ones where asbestos might be an issue. Rather than taking samples of the five areas I was concerned about, he only took two because he knew three of them were not an issue. This saved me money. Also, he gave us professional advice on handling our demolition work in order to protect our family. Environmental Services of America left my house at approximately 8:45 PM, and I had my asbestos test results the following day around noon. I would recommend Environmental Services of America to anyone, and I plan on using them for any future needs."

Common in homes built in the 20th century, black mastic was used as an adhesive for ceramic tile, linoleum, and other resilient flooring materials. Mastic is a term that has largely become outdated, but you may still find it on old cans around the house. The main concern is that some (but not all) black mastics may contain asbestos

Radon Detection and Reduction questions, answered by experts

There are steps you can take as a homeowner to remediate radon yourself. While a radon reduction professional can make the biggest impact in your home, you can make efforts to improve radon levels on your own by sealing cracks, increasing ventilation, and testing for radon regularly.

Ideally, no one will live in a house with elevated radon levels, as prolonged exposure increases the risk of serious health issues like lung cancer. However, homes with radon can be made safe through mitigation systems, such as active soil depressurization. Testing for radon regularly and addressing high levels helps ensure a safe living environment.

A homeowner can install a radon mitigation system on their own. But it’s a challenging DIY that requires a lot of knowledge about radon mitigation as well as familiarity with local regulations. You do not want to risk an improper installation that leaves the system unable to detect radon or gives it a shortened life span. Relying on a professional is the surest way to guarantee a successful installation.

The natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water can cause radon to appear in a home. The gas seeps into homes through cracks in foundations, walls, or floors, as well as through gaps around pipes or construction joints. Radon levels are influenced by soil composition, building materials, and ventilation. Poorly sealed or airtight homes can trap radon, allowing it to accumulate.

No, radon mitigation systems do not decrease home value or make a home harder to sell. In areas where homes experience similar radon exposure risks, a radon mitigation system is viewed as an improvement. Potential homebuyers often opt to buy a home with a radon mitigation system already installed to reduce the risk of cancer for their families.
