"This is actually the 2nt time we had work done by Quentin at Chimney Solutions. "This was a really difficult job - the lentil, which holds up the wall above the fireplace, had to be replaced, as there were cracks in the wall going down to the fireplace. The folks from Cunningham jacked up the fireplace and somehow left room to slide a new steel lentil into place without the whole chimney collapsing. It was touch and go but they found a way to get it done, and we were able to move forward with our new fireplace surround project, not wondering if the whole chimney crashing down. These guys are good!"

Unless the fireplace is ventless by design, you’ll need some type of exhaust pipe system to safely send fumes and other harmful byproducts out of the house. Even then, ventless fireplaces are not always permitted because they do keep the byproducts inside of your house. Ventless fireplaces are safest when installed in spaces that are themselves well-ventilated, like large rooms with lots of windows.

A chimney liner is held in place by a top plate and attached top clamp, both of which should be included in most chimney liner kits. The top plate seals to the top of the chimney flue and attaches directly to the liner. This not only holds the liner in place but supports its weight in the chimney.

While you have some flexibility in the types of wood you can use in your outdoor furnace, it's important to make wise choices for optimal performance and efficiency. Hardwoods, such as oak, maple, and cherry, are generally recommended for their higher energy content and cleaner burn. These hardwoods produce more heat per volume and tend to produce fewer creosote deposits, which can accumulate and cause a chimney fire, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The length of time it takes to repoint your chimney depends on its design and the extent of damage, but generally, the process takes a couple of days. You can expect just one to two days for a small job or up to four days for a larger chimney or more complex project.
