"This is actually the 2nt time we had work done by Quentin at Chimney Solutions. First, installing a cap on a fireplace chimney last year (including sweep etc), second repacking a cap on a furnace exhaust pipe. Both times it was absolutely professional and an enjoyable experience. Quentin went the extra mile to make the job’s result look fantastic. We highly recommend Chimney Solutions and Quentin’s really great!"

Customers say: True professional

"This was a really difficult job - the lentil, which holds up the wall above the fireplace, had to be replaced, as there were cracks in the wall going down to the fireplace. The folks from Cunningham jacked up the fireplace and somehow left room to slide a new steel lentil into place without the whole chimney collapsing. It was touch and go but they found a way to get it done, and we were able to move forward with our new fireplace surround project, not wondering if the whole chimney crashing down. These guys are good!"

"Work accomplished earlier than expected, they called with earlier appointment when someone cancelled. Showed up as scheduled and did an excellent job. Use a tarp in front of fireplace to prevent getting carpet dirty. Justin and his new helper, Justin, both professionals."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

Pellet stoves are safer than wood stoves in many ways. They don’t produce as many creosote deposits as wood stoves do, they create less smoke, and the flames are contained, decreasing the risk of any sparks or embers creating a house fire. Pellet stoves also burn more cleanly and efficiently than wood stoves do.

A fireplace hearth is necessary in most areas per building codes, especially for gas and wood-burning fireplaces. Electric fireplaces may not require a hearth, so check local building codes or ask a pro for guidance if you’re leaning toward electric. A fireplace hearth can decrease the risk of flying embers creating a fire and burning your home down. That’s why fireproof material, like tile, is used for the hearth.

The easiest fireplace to build is an electric fireplace. These aren’t true fireplaces but can mimic the look of a traditional fireplace. True fireplaces, made of brick and stone, are complex and require professional installation; adding them to an existing home is demanding and expensive. You could spend $30,000 to have a real fireplace installed.

Yes, it is possible to convert a wood-burning fireplace to gas. The average cost for this conversion is $3,000, with a typical range of $500 to $5,500. The project involves running a gas line, professionally cleaning the chimney, and installing gas logs.

Cost factors include the type of gas fireplace and whether a new gas line is needed. Installing a natural gas line can add $200 to $1,000 to the cost. Vented gas fireplaces are more expensive, averaging around $5,000, while ventless options are more cost-effective at about $1,500.

There are fire codes for a fireplace mantel made of wood or other combustible material. The mantel must be mounted at least six inches away from the fireplace opening on all sides with a non-combustible material—like stone or brick—installed between the mantel and fireplace. Building codes and regulations will vary based on your location, so before beginning the project, research the requirements in your area.
