"I hired HN Construction to paint my deck. He observed that the deck needed some repairs before the painting could be done. He replaced some boards and repaired others. I was very pleased that he found these difficiencies before the painting was started. He painted my deck and the railings. I was extremely pleased with the results. I also found that his price was reasonable and within my budget. I think Mr. Mejia is very professional and meticulous. His desires are to please the customer and leave a positive impression of his workmanship."

"I had tried for over a month to get someone to replace my roof, but I did not have any luck. Sam of J & H came to my house on a Friday to assess the damage, and by the next Friday, I had a completely new roof. The roof looks wonderful! Sam's crew worked very hard and did a great job cleaning up also. I highly recommend J and G Home Renovation! Roofing is not the only service they perform. They do a variety of home repairs and renovations!"

"We had to repair some vinyl flooring for our 3 year old home. The vinyl was no longer made and we tried it ourselves. Emily and her partner Burak came out and told us about the one we had attempted to replace was incorrectly selected. She went out and found the pieces which were no longer made and came out to repair our floors. We are renting our home out and they did an amazing job. We are so grateful for them and they are so professional. Please use them if you need anything done to your home: they are very very professional and timely."

"It did not take a long time to get an appt. I loved talking one on one with everyone who was so friendly and polite. Everyone arrived before the appt time which I loved. The job was completed in a timely manner after the technician explained what he was going to do. Lastly, the technician cleaned up after he completed the job. I will gladly use them again!"

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Both deck footings and deck posts help prop up your deck. However, footings are the bottommost parts of a deck that touch the ground. They’re usually made of concrete. Posts are pieces of wood that attach to the top of the footings with brackets. They run upwards and connect to the underside of your deck to support its weight.

The cost to build a second-story deck averages $4,800, though the actual price could range as low as $420 to upwards of $16,000. While labor costs range between 35% and 50% of the total project cost, the materials and complexity of design will ultimately lead you to save or spend more money on this home addition.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.

Yes, pressure washing a wood deck can be a good idea as it effectively lifts ingrained dirt, mold, and mildew, improving the deck's appearance and longevity. However, it must be done carefully, as it's easy to damage the wood, especially softwoods. To pressure wash safely, use a lower pressure setting and a wide, 40-degree fan pattern nozzle (often white). Keep the nozzle at least a foot away from the wood surface and maintain constant motion, avoiding hovering in one spot to prevent gouging.

In most cases, your deck will need some form of deck footing to hold it in place, preventing moisture from rotting your wood and decreasing your deck’s lifespan. Concrete deck blocks are the most common type of footing for floating decks. Some homeowners use ground-level deck footings. For added security, consider digging and laying your ground-level footings below ground.
