We wanted a landscaper to help us solve a few problems with our yard. The main problem was the back lawn where we were unsuccessful in keeping a fescue turf alive and well. We were tired of over seeding and watering each fall only to have mixed results. The only thing left in the back lawn were weeds and mud at the time we started contacting landscapers. Nesbit Landscaping was the fourth landscaper we contacted and the most responsive to our immediate need. Other companies put us off and would not consider our project until fescue planting time in the fall. We also had a couple of areas in our front yard where trees had stood where we needed to sod in the beds with 419 Bermuda to match the rest of the front lawn. We had two other areas where the lawn had died on each side of the house.
We contacted Nesbit Landscape because of the Angie List reviews on projects about the same size as ours and because of the location of the business. Eric responded quickly. My first conversation with him was not very helpful simply because I did not know how to express myself well and may have given the impression I was pumping him for ideas with no intension of making a purchase. I stated that I wanted his "opinion" on what we should do with our lawn and he asked me if I wanted an opinion or a quote. My answer was that I wanted both. After that false start, I handed the communication responsibilities over to my husband who was able to express our desires well and come up with a plan in conjunction with Eric.
As I expected, Eric had good ideas and proposed a plan that addressed our problem areas along with some plans for improvement on our curb appeal that we did not even consider. He proposed sodding a shade tolerant Bermuda or Zoysia in the back yard. Although he left the decision on turf up to us, he gave us some tools to help with the decision pointing us to a website, and places where we could see the different turf choices as well as loaning us a light meter. The light meter gave me the most confidence in our choice because I was worried we would not have enough light for a Bermuda or Zoysia. He placed the meter but reading it was my responsibility.
Eric was able to convince my husband that we needed a sprinkler system, something we had resisted doing for years. I will not include info on that in this review because we paid a different contractor but it was Eric who scheduled the sprinkler contractor and Eric who convinced us of the necessity. Turns out we could not have so easily kept the lawn alive without that system. There was a small patch of about 12 Sq Ft. where the sprinklers missed and the grass died before we realized what was going on. Eric replaced that sod on his own initiative. That was above and beyond.
The clearing and round up application went well. They even removed a small tree that was not in the original plan at no extra charge. The installation crew was polite and professional. The immediate results were stunning, a huge improvement. They even included pine straw of the beds which was not in our original plan. They moved some plants that I thought would be discarded and repurposed them along our back fence. A great idea!
We did have a problem with fall army worms by the beginning of August. Eric responded immediately to our call about the Bermuda turning brown and diagnosed it. Treating it was our responsibility. Three of our neighbors also had their lawns treated. Fortunately the treatment killed the worms and stopped it from spreading to the Zoysia. The Bermuda recovered in a week or so.
The reason I gave an overall grade of "B" instead of "A" was because of the uneasiness I feel about making the turf decision knowing that if it doesn't take, it will be my responsibility. I would have liked Nesbit Landscaping to do the light meter readings and give me more assurance that I made an acceptable choice in turf. It is an intangible feeling that I lumped under the category of professionalism. The installation and follow up was very professional. The price was a fair price, just not a super deal in my opinion.
I plan to call on Nesbit Landscaping for my future landscaping needs.
