"We underwent a MAJOR home reno and Kevin and his team was by our side every step of the way. From design to implementation, Kevin was transparent, responsive and professional. Even when we were worried about minor details, Kevin assured us he would make sure we were happy. Our space went from cramped and dated to open and sleek. I seriously can't believe the finished product is my house! Cynthia and Tom followed up with the sub-contractors and ensured the work was done right the first time. I promise you won't be disappointed with Alex Custom Homes!"

"The construction done by Lucky and his sons was excellent! The new addition was built stronger than our house! I don’t know that we could have a better job from anyone else. We met Lucky after speaking with 8 other contractors, he had already googled our house so he had an idea of the job before he got here whereas the other contractors wanted pictures first. I liked his confidence and knowledge and he was also an engineer which was reflected in his workmanship. His design was better then we expected or even thought of. As a general contractor he doesn’t always do the site work but he was here much of the time checking on the job. His two sons did most of the hard work and not only were they extremely knowledgeable they were very pleasant to have working in your home. Lucky expected a lot from any of his subcontractors any made sure it was done right and calling them back if he wasn’t satisfied (the concrete guys did a sloppy job on the exterior concrete, not affecting the construction just the outside look of it. Lucky made them come back and fix it without us even having to ask. Anything we asked he went above and beyond to do. Lucky’s contract was the most detailed contract we’d seen protecting both parties. The job took one month longer then expected which I’m sure is normal in construction but due to issues out of his control, like two hurricanes. His initial quote was within the same range as most the others. The job ran $5,000 over budget but that was due to changes made and cost involved was explained first with the option to move forward with it or not. Things like we were going to try and save an existing sliding door that was 28 years old we changed to a nice French door that of course was an additional cost. A budget was set up and explained at the signing of the contract and some things ran higher then projected like concrete, the family room was built over an existing Florida room so the concrete had to be leveled to bring the floor up so there was no longer a step down which cost more. The budget cost was based on a step down which we changed deciding wanted it level. Extra costs were from our changes. If we had not made changes we would have been on budget. I don’t think construction is ever a pleasant experience but I think Lucky and his team got us through it. We most certainly would hire him again."

"Our home was left in shambles (not livable) for over 5 weeks by the previous "contractor" who turned out to be a total flop: no license, no true experience in the scope of project we were doing. We were scrambling trying to find someone to help us with the mess we were left with. We contacted Mr. Martin Lecina, who came out to take a look at the house immediately and gave us a very reasonable quote within a day. We decided to take a chance and hire Mr. Lecina and his crew based on the professionalism and knowledge he exhibited at the initial meeting. To our delight, they started the project the very next week as promised. Unlike the previous horrendous experience we've had, Mr. Martin kept the communication line open 24/7, and ALWAYS kept his words. Despite the fact that it rained HEAVILY for 2+ weeks straight from the very beginning of the project (all exterior work: windows, sidings, stucco repair, wood repair, painting of entire exterior), Mr. Lecina's crew showed up bright and early every single day, and worked non-stop until each day's work was completed. They were very courteous, knowledgeable and skillful. The crew cleaned up and were very respectful to our home, which we greatly appreciated (stark contrast from our previous experience). The quality of their work is top-notch! Very meticulous and truly had the homeowners best interest at heart. The entire project was finished within the time frame as promised by Mr. Lecina. Mr. Lecina and his crew were a Godsend to us; they rescued us from a total nightmare. It is so rare to come by an HONEST and knowledgeable contractor nowadays, and we felt like we hit the jackpot with Mr. Lecina's company. We cannot say enough great things about General Constructions of Orlando. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!!!"

Customers say: Terrific value

"From beginning to end, a stellar job. We demolished part of our house, to replace it with multiple rooms with exacting requirements. Craftsmanship and professionalism beyond compare. Thomas, as well as his crew, is easy to work with and on top of things. Would re-hire in a heartbeat, and consider myself lucky to get him."

Home Building questions, answered by experts

Custom homes can take an average of 18 months to build, mainly due to the lengthy design process, and most projects take somewhere between 12 and 24 months. When you work with the right custom home builders near you, they can help you map the road ahead and understand what can speed up or delay the timeline. Choosing locally available materials, for example, can speed things up without losing that customized touch.

A-frame homes are on the smaller side. While there’s no set square footage amount it has to be, it will usually come in around 1,000 square feet or smaller.

Modular homes can go up or down in value depending on a few factors. In areas where real estate is appreciating, the value of modular homes is likely to increase, and vice versa. Additionally, the value of modular homes depends partially on the area. In cities where every other home is stick-built, modular homes might be considered a functional obsolescence, in which case they could be less desirable and go down in value. In either case, though, modular homes can still be a good investment, especially since they provide housing at a lower upfront cost.

Framing is often the most expensive phase of building a house because it’s time-consuming and requires a lot of materials. It costs between $20,000 and $50,000 on average, depending on materials and labor costs. Before construction begins, it’s possible that purchasing land is the priciest step in the process. Some plots of land sell for $3,000, while others cost upwards of $150,000.

The term “cottage” is subjective, so there’s no rigid definition, but it generally refers to a small home with simple and purposeful architecture that embraces nature and focuses on charm over everything else. Cottages are typically 1 or 1 1/2-stories tall, usually with gabled roofs, and are built out of natural materials that help make the structure a part of the surrounding nature rather than something that stands out from it. A big part of what makes a cottage a cottage is the decor, which includes natural materials from the nearby area.
