Redwood and cedar work well for gates because they resist decay and severe weather conditions. Redwood is considered more elegant, though cedar is more affordable. Other options include oak and treated pine. Avoid softwoods like pine and spruce for outdoor projects, as they are susceptible to water, rot, and sun damage.

While there’s no hard evidence to support this idea, driveway gates at least provide an additional obstacle that may deter crime. After all, a would-be burglar or trespasser would have to break into the gate and the property itself. The extra work could encourage them to move onto a house without a driveway gate.

The obvious disadvantage of an automatic gate is that it runs on electricity. If the power goes out, it won’t open or close unless there’s a manual override. Automatic gates are also much more complicated than manual gates, with tech-heavy components that make them more expensive to repair.
