"Excellent. Nick and Vince are very friendly and professional and their clients gave them excellent reviews. We have contracted them to build our new custom home and so far it has been great. We will give another review during the process."

"Mr. Crum has done work for me at 2 of my residences many times in the last 30 years, most recently a year ago. He actually built my former home, then renovated and improved the property many times over the course of my residence there. He is a craftsman and gets very involved with his projects. He is on site most days himself and is consistently available to confer with me when needed. His work on my kitchen, baths and built in family room cabinetry in my new home far exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend him for all your building needs, new construction and renovations. He has a true eye for detail on each and every project he tackles.

"I have owned 3 houses in ocala , Fl. For about 10 years now. About 2 years ago a good friend of over 30 years recommended GPS to me . They have done extensive renovations in 2 of my houses. They do a complete professional finished job at a great price. They have done total kitchen and bath renovations with a great attention to detail. Painted entire interior and exterior of 1 house with excellent finished quality. Jason's suggestion of a butcher block kitchen was a great choice as well as his talent in color coordinating the project. I am very fortunate to find such a good contractor. I have had many interactions with contractors in florida, New York and New Jersey, and will say GPS is up top on my list and would recommend his work. Thanks Jason."

"They gave excellent service. I think the price was compatible or comparable to probably other people who do the same type of work. Generally, my husband gets several bids, and tries to see who comes in, so if it’s about the same, he’ll go with the one he feels better with. They did it right away.  They really did a good job. They did it quickly. What happened was when backing out of that garage at that property, the door came down. The door was probably as old as the house, and the house is about 26 years old, so it was time. I’m glad it didn’t fall on anybody. They came out right away. They secured the door. They fixed it so that the cars could get out. They secured the door, so they could come back and put the new door on."

Home Building questions, answered by experts

Typically, architects do not build homes in a hands-on sense of doing the actual framing, roofing, or other building. Architects usually do not have the training and experience to build the homes they design. An architect would need to know how to do the specific trades required to build a house, which is possible but not a common practice. A general contractor or homebuilder typically oversees the actual details of building the house that the architect designs.

Buying a house is easier than building one from scratch. Buying an existing home is almost always faster, even if you need to make renovations once you move in. When you hire the right team to build a home, they will simplify the design and build phases so that there is little guesswork throughout the process, but building new construction will almost always take longer than buying an existing home.

Yes, a home builder or contractor should have the proper licensing and insurance. Licensing requirements vary by state and municipality, but most states mandate that a builder holds at least a general contractor’s license. For specialized work such as plumbing, electrical, roofing, or sewage systems, individual licenses may be required, in which case the builder may subcontract the work. You can use Angi’s state licensing tool to review your local guidelines and confirm a builder's credentials. As you browse professionals, you can also look for the “Angi Certified” badge. This indicates the business meets our certification standards, which include passing a criminal background check, holding applicable state and local licenses, and maintaining an average rating of 3.0 or better.

A construction manager is particularly useful in the case of a large-scale build with custom design elements, so it’s usually worth it to hire one. They can help manage your budget, maintain quality control, oversee timelines, and navigate unexpected hurdles. While construction managers are pricey, they can actually save money in the long run by identifying cost-saving opportunities and ensuring the project stays within budget.

Whether it’s more affordable to gut a house than build a new one depends on the markets where you'd be buying and selling. However, it’s usually less expensive to renovate a home than to build new construction.

Most homeowners pay between $100,000 and $200,000 for demolition and remodeling costs, whereas the average cost to build a new home is between $139,000 and $531,300.
