"I would highly recommend A J Wells if you are in need of a new roof. I just happened to see them at my neighbor's house and went over. That is how the project began. The whole process was simple and the company representative guided me throughout. Customer satisfaction is a top priority for this company and they want you to know what is happening with the project and they want you to be happy when it is done. The workers were extremely hard working and masters of their craft. I love my new roof. It totally updates the look of my old house. I am so happy to have a new roof as we head into hurricane season."

"Excellent! From the estimate process through the final walk around, ever person I was in contact with were professional, timely, and clearly knew what they were doing. Roof looks great, clean up was great and at completion, I pointed out a couple of minor items which they resolved on the spot. I even noticed a small tear in a window screen after they left, they had a screen repair guy at my house the same day. Not the cheapest out there (I got three quotes), but you get what you pay for (including a 15 year warranty which no one else came close to). Cost included replacement of 2 skylights, which we are thrilled with. Highly recommend them."

"Four different roofing companies came to check the roof and give me an estimate for repair and re-shingling. I chose Shultz Roofing because the owner, Douglas Shultz came on time, inspected the roof and explained what was needed in a way that was professional and understandable to me. He explained that he didn't know how much plywood decking needed to be replaced until the present shingles were removed. Our home has many large trees surrounding it which makes a difference in the amount of sun reaches it to dry it off.

Doug suggested and I agreed to have the kitchen skylight glass to meet the new hurricane code and the installation of a chimney cricket to prevent water leaking between the chimney and the roofing. We settled on a good time for the company and for me to begin the job. Doug was very knowledgable and professional.

Removal of the old roof and decking needing replacement and completion of the job including the chimney cricket and skylight glass took a couple of days. I was home most of the time. The roofers worked steadily and professionally. They worked well together as a team. Clean-up was very good! Plants and gardens were intact. They checked for and picked up nails that had fallen off the roof. I found very few when gardening. The roof looks great and the glass skylight is so much more clear than the old one. We can see the tops of the trees very well. The roof vents were needed to allow the heat to escape in the summer.

The following year, roofers came out to clean off and check the roof. Perfect timing! We'd just had a rough summer storm that left many leaves and small branches on the roof. This year, summer 2011, there was a small leak between the main building and the attached garage. Roofers came out quickly, checked the area and found the reason for the leak - a slight opening around one of the nails, and repaired it . . . no charge for the couple of hours of work. Shultz Roofing is the best roofing company I've ever worked with! They did an excellent job and were professional."

"I would recommend Kenny from K&S to others in need of roofing work. He was professional, efficient, and reliable. Due to my own procrastination, my home still had broken roof tiles from Hurricane Irma, about 15 to 20 of them. My home insurance provider did an inspection recently and then sent me a letter giving me only 3 weeks to repair the tiles or they would end my coverage. Late one night this week, I reached out to several service providers through Angie's List. Kenny responded the next day and we set an appointment for the following day. When he arrived, he inspected the damage, we quickly agreed on a price, and he started working right away. He came back the next day to complete the job. While I received a quote from another company that was lower, that company was not available soon enough. Kenny was there on the spot, problem solved immediately, so he definitely deserved a premium."

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Yes, solar tubes work during the winter as long as it’s light outside and they aren’t covered by snow. Sun tunnels are made to work year-round to bring in natural light, and some people find them even more beneficial during the winter. With less daylight outside, it can be even more important to bring brightness into homes to reduce electricity costs.

There are four main types of lighting used in homes: ambient, task, accent, and decorative. Within these categories, there are a number of fixtures to choose from including ceiling-mounted lights, floor lamps, under-cabinet lights, track lighting, and more.

Choosing the fixture that’s right for you depends on your home design and the area you’re looking to illuminate.

Fixed skylights are by far the most popular type. Because skylights can be pretty high up on your ceiling, fixed (rather than operable) skylights remove some maintenance from the equation. Plus, you don’t have to constantly worry if you shut your skylight fully the last time you opened it or if you’re going to find a leak later on during a rainy day.

When planning out skylights and deciding how big they should be, it's important to look at the dimensions of the interior space. In addition to changing a room aesthetically, skylights influence the illumination and temperature of the space below. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends that a skylight’s size should never be more than 5% of the floor area in rooms with many windows.

Water will leak through a skylight if there are issues in the sealing of the skylight. Find and fix those issues yourself if possible, but it’s a good idea to contact a professional, as there could be much more water damage than you initially saw. Plus, it’s dangerous to work on a roof without the proper safety equipment and know-how.
