Small jobs welcome

"I am a retired builder and usually not impressed with building professionals, I have hired here in Florida. Every member of the Sun Control installation crew was knowledgeable, courteous and performed the project which exceeded my highest expectations. I would highly recommend Sun Control to any member of my family and my friends. Very satisfied with my new hurricane windows and doors. Thank you Larry, Raul, Eric, Carlos and everyone that was involved."

"It went very well.  Price was very reasonable compared to other estimates we had received from other companies.  Quality of the work was great.  Bob (the owner) patiently explained all the details to us--everything from installing the shutters in the event of a hurricane warning to explaining how the shutters were labeled for each window.  Bob was very accessible and either answered a phone call right away or responded promptly to a voicemail we had left.  He also responded via email.  Bob was very professional, friendly, and easy to deal with.  His workmen were both very professional.  Overall it was a very good experience and we would not hesitate to recommend the company to a friend or neighbor.

Awnings questions, answered by experts

The longest-lasting awning materials include vinyl, polycarbonate, and polyester for their durability and cleanability. Other materials like canvas and metal can last a long time, but may wear out faster. The key to getting the longest life from your awning material is to maintain it properly by cleaning yearly, keeping debris from gathering on it, and protecting it during stormy weather or high winds by retracting it or moving it to a protected area.

Awnings offer a variety of materials to choose from, each of which has its own benefits. Cotton is a lower-cost option that’s also more eco-friendly because it’s made from natural materials, while acrylic-coated polyester and vinyl offer better durability against harsh weather. Fiberglass and metal are also resilient to weather, although metal can be vulnerable to corrosion without protective sealant. Ultimately, you’ll need to consider your climate and your budget in deciding the best material for your awning.

The main disadvantage of an awning window is that you can’t use it to escape in an emergency. Another disadvantage of awning windows is that they can get dirty quicker than other types of windows that don’t open outward, especially if you keep them open when it’s raining or snowing. You can hire a local window replacement installer to decide if an awning window is right for your home.

Minor fabric patching is DIY-friendly, but frame and mechanical repairs should be professionally handled.

Awnings offer a number of benefits, including:

  • Reduced summer home cooling costs with lower solar heat gains

  • Protection from sun, rain, and snow damage

  • Increased curb appeal for your home

Keep in mind that awnings also have drawbacks, including the potential to reduce your view, block natural light, and create new occasional home maintenance needs.
