"Installers arrived on the designated day, seemed experienced and went right to work. I had to be away for a few days, so I missed the completion. When I returned my wife said the installers had put everything up, cleaned up, showed her how to operate the accordions, the inspector had inspected, the inspection report had been received and filed. I wanted to see the report so I got it out and it said we had failed; my wife hadn't read it. I called Gulfstream and they didn't know we had failed. The report said fasteners for the panel tracks on the arched windows had to be "6 inches oc maximum spacing." I was disappointed because I believed Gulfstream should have known this. The installers came back a day later and concluded that all they could do was put another fastener between each existing fastener, which would, unfortunately, double the number of fasteners. A few days later another inspector came. By the time I saw him he had completed the entire inspection again; he had been unaware we had been inspected before and failed. He pointed to all the fasteners on the arched window tracks and said he had never seen anything like that before, it was silly, unnecessary and probably weakened the structure as much as it secured the panel tracks. Apparently the rules are subject to individual interpretation.
Later, because we planned to be away for a few weeks, I believed it a good idea to close all shutters, just in case a storm arose. I got out all the instructions Gulfstream had given me and went to work. I noticed what I thought were a lot of nicks and scratches on the accordions, so I called Gulfstream. The woman who answered assured me that was normal because their weight and unwieldiness made them awkward for installers to handle. She offered to send someone over, but I accepted her explanation: they're all aluminum, so not a big deal. While installing the removable base tracks for the doors' accordions, I noticed that some of the anchors were so deep in the concrete that only a few groves of the bolts engaged. The installers and inspectors must not have been concerned, so at some point I'll buy some longer bolts, if I can find them, just to ease my mind.
All the accordions closed nicely, but installing the panels was hard work. If I had this to do over, I would try harder to overcome my wife's objections to accordions on the bay windows on the back of the house, because schlepping the panels back there is more work than it seems. All the panels were numbered and fit nicely until the last four: they were too long, and no way would they fit. I called Gulfstream and they sent a man over that afternoon. He said the panels should fit because they were all the same length, but he couldn't get them in either: the track dipped a fraction. He cut an eighth of an inch off each panel, and they slid right in. So, closing everything up took me the better part of two days and a fair amount of sweat. I'll need help if I ever have to do this in a hurry, but at least I know now that everything fits..
I'd say Gulfstream did as good a job as anyone could expect. They certainly responded promptly each time I called. They did everything they promised.

"Overall installation went really well. Karl constantly shows ingenuity on any project he works on. He seems to be able to look at a picture and easily re-create it. For example: I handed him 2 newel posts a 8 foot piece of base molding, an 8 foot 5" wide piece of MDF, some bead board, a side panel and a base kitchen cabinet... and he built a beautiful kitchen island. Bottom line- you give him the materials and the idea and he will bring it to life. On top of everything else, Karl is sincere, honest and shows up as promised. He is definitely the exception among your usual lot of South Florida contractors.

"My neighbor had a water pipe break which ended up flooding my condo. Eco Magic Environmental responded very quickly and dried out my place with no problems. They were so polite and professional. I loved how they protected my personal items and furniture during the
restoration. Their pricing was the lowest compare to 3 other companies. After my place was dried out, they came back and installed new drywall, baseboards, and wood flooring that had to be replaced because of water damage. Again, I was so impressed to the details these gentlemen performed with. My place looks like brand new again!"

Small jobs welcome

"Shawn’s customer service was amazing - my husband and I are in Ft. Lauderdale and my mother in law is in Sebring. We needed someone to help her as we couldn’t get there for a couple weeks. I found Shawn - his price was the most reasonable out of everyone I called and the communication back and forth was amazing. My mother in law loved him. We now have a great contact for future projects."

Window Shutter Repair questions, answered by experts

Not all windows are suitable for shutters, as certain styles can prevent them from functioning correctly. It's best to avoid installing shutters on bay windows, picture windows, dormer windows, and double-mulled windows. Shutters are better suited for large, full-size standard windows or French doors.

Additionally, consider the room's lighting needs. Since shutters effectively block light, they are an excellent choice for rooms where you want more darkness and privacy, such as a master bedroom or a main living room. For window types that are not ideal for functional shutters, some homeowners choose to install fixed (non-functional) shutters to maintain a consistent look across the home.

Estate shutters offer more energy efficiency, privacy, and light control than blinds. They provide better insulation against heat and cold, lowering your energy bills. They’re also sturdy, durable, and last much longer than blinds (up to 50 years or longer). They’re also low-maintenance and can add curb appeal to your home. The return on investment (ROI) for estate shutters is around 75%.

Plantation shutters cost an average of $2,990, making them one of the pricier shutter options. However, they offer a 75% return on your investment and are great options for boosting curb appeal and property value. Most people go for plantation shutters for their timeless, vintage look. They also provide the strongest light blocking and temperature control for your home.

The most popular estate shutter brands include Hunter Douglas, Budget Blinds®, and Graber®. Hunter Douglas shutters cost $20 to $26 per square foot and include high-quality hardwood and faux wood options. Budget Blinds shutters cost $20 to $24 per square foot, depending on if you choose natural wood or another material. Depending on the material, Graber shutters range from $18 to $24 per square foot.

Wood is the most classic shutter material. Common options include pine, cedar, or brasswood. MDF shutters are also a more affordable option that retains the timeless, classic look. Composite shutters, mainly vinyl and aluminum shutters, have also become more popular over the years. You may also find steel shutters, sometimes referred to as security shutters, used on the exterior. Shutters also come in various colors and finishes, adding another layer of design flexibility.
