"Extremely pleased with the whole project from start to finish. Our attic was insulated a little more than a month ago. The comfort level upstairs is noticeably different. We have experienced 90+ degree weather the past several weeks, where before we would avoid the game room upstairs during the day because of the heat. Now, it is the all day hang out. Upstairs bedrooms are cool when you walk in. No longer having to wait after dark for them to cool down. Very pleased. The Greanstar team from Sales, Installers, and owner were all very accomadating and very professional. If and when we move again, I will have them out for our new home the very next day."

"Make sure you ask Dominic questions and he will answer them. Yes he does use subcontractors but I checked them out and they have been with him for years. His crews are good and reliable, them left not mess. Just make sure you pick the insulation that fits your needs. The loose blown in stuff will me be messy for a year or so as it takes time to settle down. It works the best and costs the least. They have a lot of solutions for any attic issues. Nice group of guys to to work with. I would hire and recommend them again."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

It's essential to use insulation materials specifically designed for air ducts. Common types of duct insulation materials include fiberglass, foam board, and reflective foil. These insulation materials have the right properties to withstand the temperature and airflow conditions within the ductwork. Using the appropriate insulation not only ensures efficient temperature control but also prevents potential safety hazards or the release of harmful particles into the air.

Exposed ductwork can sweat just like ductwork placed behind walls, sometimes even more so. Ductwork sweats—like a cold drink on a hot day—because of a temperature imbalance between the air in the duct and the air in the room. In a crawl space or wall, this temperature can equalize faster due to the small space but in lofts and open rooms, that wouldn’t happen as quickly. Many people insulate their ducts for this reason.

If you’re a savvy DIYer around the house, own the basic tools, and have enough time on your hands, you can definitely install fiberglass insulation yourself. Doing the work yourself will certainly keep overall insulation costs down. However, if you’re not confident in your handy skills around the house, call in a professional.

One of the disadvantages of soffit vents is they can bleed warm air from the attic during winter, resulting in slightly higher energy bills and a colder house. There are ways to mitigate this effect—mostly just closing the vent in the fall. What’s most important is your attic is ventilated to some degree in the winter.

Traditional clapboard siding, particularly with panels made from wood, is not a significant insulator on its own. However, you can keep your home cooler in summer and warmer with "insulated clapboard siding," which is a type of vinyl clapboard siding with a built-in foam insulation. Consult a local siding contractor to determine whether insulated siding is right for your home.
