"Blue Ridge Builders completed my full basement remodel and I was very impressed with the company and the crew who worked on my project. Hiring them was a great idea because they provided quality service, professional customer service, and they showed up early to job sites. I enjoyed working with them and I recommend them to anyone looking to have major/minor home improvement projects done."

"I was very impressed with Sentri Homes - their customer service was excellent. They sent a subcontractor to install some vinyl laminate in my bathroom and he ended up getting glue all over the carpet in our bedroom. The sub ended up ghosting both me and Sentri, leaving me stuck with a ruined carpet. Sentri stuck with me for over a month to get the carpet replaced with the identical original and to get the vinyl job 100% completed. The carpet was a Home Depot exclusive and Sentri handled everything with them. I will be using Sentri for a much bigger renovation I have coming up soon, because I know that they will make sure everything gets done right no matter what problems come up. The vinyl looks great too."

"I decided to upgrade several elements of my home and hired Merryfield. They were fabulous. Lew (co-owner) helped me to figure out what I needed, but at the same time, respected my simpler taste and budget. The work crew was terrific. I work from home 3 days a week and I was totally comfortable while they were there and equally comfortable when I wasn't there. I have a snarky dog whom the crew completely charmed. I can't say enough about the friendliness, cleanliness and politeness of the workers. I found the folks at Merryfield to be good communicators, timely and flexible. They stayed very much within my budget. I couldn't be happier with the outcome!"

"Trying to get the scheduling of the work was not easy due to the company being over booked. I left several messages and my phone call was never returned. I finally was able to have an appointment scheduled and the gentleman was late because he was lost (which is understandable) but no one called me to advise me of the mishap or to let me know he would be late. Once we decided on what was going to be done, he spent the day taking the tiles up. We had to reschedule him to come out to put the tiles down. In speaking with his "boss", he was telling me the extra charges that would take place and explained to me that most customers purchase their own tile, even though the deal includes the tile. He informed me that they don't make any money off these big deals and that it's just their way of getting their foot in the door, which I think was unprofessional. I took the following Monday off for the work to be done and two guys show up with no material or supplies but inform me that the guy that was suppose to do the work called off for the day. I continously called the 302 # listed on this site to no avail. The guys had to leave because they had no tile and wasn't aware that there was a radiator, when the gentleman who was there should have noted that. I was called by another gentleman who was very nice and very professional and he asked me to have the guys come back the next day and they would waive my additional fees. I had an appointment the following morning but was home by noon. The men arrived at noon and finished the job that day. The tile looks nice and they were very nice.  They took measurements to replace my tile in my kitchen and to put molding in my living and dining room and never sent me an estimate. They did leave footprints throughout my living room and steps...but overall I am pleased with the tile.

"Jim Hunt and his team did an outstanding job.  We could not be more pleased.  His team arrived on time each morning and were clearly dedicated to their trade and dedicated to their customer.  They were receptive to our scheduling needs as we wanted to remain at home as long as possible during the floor job.  The floors were done in two phases as directed by us without question by Hunt and the floor company.  The floor company used by Hunt also gets and A for all categories.  The entire job was completed in a timely manner and the home was left neat and cleaner than we imagined it could be after a hardwood floor sand/refinish job.  And we are always very concerned with cleanliness when selecting contractors.  Price was fair for both the family room job and floors.  Hunt also made great suggestions to enhance final appearance.  Furthermore, upon arrival the first day, we added two relatively minor jobs and after hearing them stated he would not raise the price given at original estimate.  It is evident he prides himself in customer satisfaction.  I highly recommend him to any member reading these reviews.

Custom Home Builders questions, answered by experts

The average cost to renovate or remodel a home is $52,300, with most projects ranging from $19,500 to over $88,400. However, costs can vary significantly, from as low as $3,000 for a small project to $170,000 or more for a complete home remodel.

Several factors influence the total price, including:

  • Project Scope and Size: The extent of the renovations, whether it's a single room or the entire house.

  • Location: Geographic location affects labor and material costs.

  • Materials: The quality of materials chosen.

  • Room Type: Kitchen remodels ($14,500 - $70,000+) are generally more expensive than bedroom remodels ($1,500 - $5,500).

  • Other Factors: The time of year, complexity of the work, and any additions or expansions.

On a per-square-foot basis, you can expect to pay between $15 and $60 for standard projects and up to $150 for luxury renovations.

Examples of specific project costs include:

  • Basement remodel: ~$20,200

  • Garage remodel: ~$27,900

  • Loft conversion: ~$20,200

  • Disability accommodation remodel: ~$4,300

  • Major home repairs: ~$11,700

If you are financing the project, note that some loan programs, like the FHA 203(k), may require a minimum project cost (e.g., $5,000) and will necessitate a home appraisal and professional cost estimates. Using a home renovation cost estimator can also help you budget for your project.

A construction-to-permanent loan is the most common type of mortgage used to finance a house teardown and rebuild. These loans include financing for construction costs and convert to a long-term mortgage once construction is complete. Check the terms of the loan closely before beginning work—there are often restrictions requiring you to use licensed contractors for all work.

It usually takes around four to six months to build and install a modular home, although your timeline could go up to around eight months if there are delays in the manufacturing or permitting process. Heavy site preparation and foundation pouring can extend that timeline if you need them, as can customizations you want for your modular home. Your modular home company should be able to provide an estimate for the construction timeline before you sign any contracts or agree to any work.

To get a quote from a builder or general contractor, contact them over the phone or online and explain your project. If you already have house plans drawn up, they’ll need to review them to determine the project's scope before providing you with a quote. Ask for your quote in writing and compare quotes from several pros before choosing the best one for your needs.

How long it takes to build a custom home or rebuild a home after a disaster varies depending on many factors, but averages between seven and 14 months. Smaller homes or homes that don’t need a re-poured foundation may take less time to build than larger homes or homes without an existing foundation. Material availability, contractor schedules, and permit and inspection timelines can all affect how long your house takes to build.
