"They fixed a leak that we had around a skylight. They also noted some issues (gutters) which may have contributed to our leaks. Nice job!"

"I had a piece of rake board capping that tore off in a storm, and I had Mike come out to our house to do the work. At first, the rake board cap was replaced with a white color, which didn't match our other light brown capping. However, Mike emailed me pictures of the work, I was able to discuss the color issues with him, and he offered to switch out the cap so I would be satisfied. Anyone who's had work done on their house knows that things don't always go according to plan the first time (even when everyone is trying their best), but Mike handled my comments and questions well and wanted to make me happy. I appreciated his work and genuine professionalism."

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Yes, skylights can affect a home’s energy efficiency, either positively or negatively. Properly installed, energy-efficient skylights with Low-E coatings, double glazing, and UV-blocking glass can help regulate indoor temperatures and reduce heating and cooling costs. However, poorly insulated or older skylights can contribute to heat loss in winter and excess heat gain in summer, lowering overall energy efficiency.

Skylights are the most likely windows to leak if installed improperly, so there are a few questions you should ask any skylight installer before you hire them:

  • Do you specialize in skylight installation or only windows in general?

  • Do you offer any kind of warranty for the installation?

  • What recourse do I have if the skylight leaks shortly after installation?

  • Do you have references I can speak with?

  • How long have you been in business?

  • Are you licensed and insured?

Ceiling costs depend on many factors, such as the material used and size, but coffered ceilings are considered one of the more expensive ceiling options. If you want to install a coffered ceiling but have a limited budget, consider using plywood instead of hardwood—it costs $2–$4.50 per square foot, while hardwood can be as much as $20 per square foot.

Yes, if you have ventilated skylights, you can install insect screens on them. Insect screens for skylights cost $10 to $50 each, depending on their size and quality. Most pros highly recommend insect screens for ventilated skylights because they keep pests outside of your home while allowing fresh air inside.

Roof windows and skylights can be installed on various roof materials, but skylights are usually the only option that you have if you have a flat roof or a roof with a slope under 15 degrees. In these cases, roof windows have too high of a risk of leaking to be suitable options. The specific installation requirements may vary, so it's important to hire a window replacement contractor. Certain types of roofs may not be ideal if they limit the size of the window or if they pose an issue with rainwater collecting around the area.
