If you plan to build the pergola over a pre-existing deck or patio, that will increase the cost.

General contractors typically manage home renovation or build projects that last more than a week and involve various skilled tradespeople. Some examples include building a new home or barn, adding an extension or garage, or carrying out major room remodels involving extensive plumbing, electrical, and structural changes.

Building a pergola yourself costs less than hiring someone to do it for two reasons. First, a contractor will charge a markup on the materials. Second, you’ll save the entire cost of labor. In exchange for the money you save, you’ll need to dedicate at least one full weekend to the project.

While your municipality may have its own regulations requiring pergolas or other structures to be a certain height above a fire pit, the standard recommendation is that the pergola should be at least 10 feet above the fire pit. A taller pergola allows the heat from the flames to dissipate before reaching the structure.

You can install exposed solid wood beams for between $6 and $80 per linear foot, but these beams are often decorative if you’re retrofitting an existing home with them. Laminated veneer lumber beams, more commonly called LVL beams, cost $3 to $12 per linear foot, and while they can’t span nearly as long of a distance as steel I-beams, they can provide more open spaces than traditional wooden beams.
