Small jobs welcome

"The crew did a great job on my patios and concrete pad. They were respectful and neat and went above and beyond with care when moving plants and lawn items and ensuring the equipment and materials were out of the way each night. The patios are beautiful and are going to be well enjoyed."

"We used Arnold's Masonry for a new patio installation. From the first contact, the communication was outstanding. We had them install a "paver" patio and it looks incredible. They also built a set of wooden steps, so masonry AND construction is the right name for the company. Their work was precise and was extremely efficient and timely. The team was friendly, polite and felt like part of the family. I highly recommend Arnold's Masonry for any work you need done. Great guys, great work and an awesome patio!"

"This was a terrific experience. Everything went as planned. The crew arrived on time for every appointment and completed the work on schedule. Communication via email, text, and phone was terrific. The price was fair with no surprises. While on the property, they were polite and considerate of my neighbors and pets. They offered ideas for the best layout and care of the patio. They worked with a sense of urgency. I would hire them again."

"We had a 10' x 16' motorized awning installed. Tom was excellent. Quality of workmanship was excellent as was cleanliness on site. In particular, his timing was impeccable. He showed up when he said he would and delivered when promised. Just in time for a large family gathering!"

"We interviewed several top-rated (by Angie's List) contractors and selected Sensible Home Products based on Jeremy's obvious passion for his work and his attention to detail. He was the only one to notice an unusual gutter/drainage solution we have on our garage. He brainstormed several ideas with the goal of making it look as natural and unobtrusive as possible. His goal in every conversation we had was to make the house look as good as possible and to make sure we were thoroughly pleased. The crew was polite and hardworking and did excellent work. After removing all the old siding there were a few areas of rot to be dealt with, including the header above the garage door. Jeremy had to make a special trip to get a long enough 2x12 replacement. This attention to detail and commitment to doing things the right way was evident throughout the project. We were especially impressed with the door and window trim work, the trim around the garage door, and the custom decorative post they built for our front entryway which matches the style of our mailbox post and lamp post. We're thrilled with the way the job turned out and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Jeremy and Sensible Home Products in the future."

Patios questions, answered by experts

Several types of porches are available to meet your needs and style preferences. Some common porch types include:

  • Porticos are essentially a roof over a walkway leading to the home's front entrance.

  • Sunrooms are closed-in porches that are an extension of the house with glass or plastic panels that allow optimal sunlight.

  • Wraparound porches extend around the entire home, or at least the front and one side, and offer multiple entrances to the house.

  • Back porches are an extension of the home’s floor into the outdoors. These offer more protection and privacy than a deck.

If you have multiple rooms that could use some organization, home storage solutions like cubbies in your mudroom or built-in shelving can help you move clutter off the floor. Take it one step further by pairing shelves and cabinets with personalized aesthetic touches like woven or canvas lined metal baskets to add another organizational element.

In almost all cases, you will need permits if you plan on building a sunroom over your patio, but regulations and requirements will depend on your municipality. Permits to enclose your patio will usually cost between $300 and $1,000. Since navigating local building codes and zoning requirements is challenging—and the consequences of not following them can be extremely expensive—we strongly recommend hiring a sunroom builder to complete the work and pull the permits for you.

Whether it's better to add a sunroom or a regular room to your home depends on your goals. If you need extra bedrooms, building rooms with four standard walls makes more sense than adding a sunroom. If you don't need extra sleeping areas but would like to expand the living space of your home, a sunroom makes sense.

A screened-in porch can add value to your home, with a potential return on investment (ROI) of 70% to 84%. The actual value added depends heavily on several factors. Climate is a major consideration; homes in warm, humid, or buggy areas (like the Southern regions) see the highest ROI. In colder climates, the value is diminished as the unconditioned space is unusable for much of the year. Other factors that influence the return include the quality of materials and construction, the size of the porch, and the local real estate market. While a screened-in porch can enhance curb appeal and attract potential buyers, it is not included in the home's total square footage for appraisal purposes.
