"This is high end lighting and expensive, so keep that in mind. I suggest using them for any high end new lighting installations. Mark is also highly creative. The installation team is very good at this!"

"Ken and his helper were amazing. Ken came out to recommend and quote light fixtures in our unfinished basement, connect a couple of Ring floodlights, and replace the doorbell transformer and install a new Ring doorbell at my residence. Ken's work is clean, fast, and reasonably priced! I would absolutely hire him again!"

"As first time suburban homeowners whose previous home was a small apartment in New York City, we knew immediately that we would need help decorating. I reached out to Design by Jonathans online and heard back from them instantly. Our first phone discussion left me knowledgeable about the process and how we would work together. I was feeling overwhelmed with having several empty rooms - no furniture, no rugs, nothing but Jonathan reassured me that he would lead us through the process step by step. And that's what they did! Brilliant, humorous, talented, patient, trustworthy, flexible are all adjectives I'd use to describe Jonathan during the time spent with him. He went above and beyond - answering texts about bar stools, patiently scrolling long internet pages to find the perfect pillows/rugs/wall hangings and answering every email promptly. He was always on time for our appointments and was always prepared. I think he was great at finding pieces that both appealed to what my husband and I both liked. I'm sure this isn't an easy task. He was filled with lots of great advice and we trusted him when he said 'If you don't love it now, you won't like it later. Let's keep looking.' We would have been lost without him. We have some beautiful spaces in our new home thanks to his hard work and keen eye. I can't recommend him enough. He also is talented in the lighting / audio space as well as it was his suggestion we add several more ceiling lights to the dark living room. Wow, what a difference. He respected our budget as well and never pushed us. I'm thankful for the experience and have received so many compliments on our new home."

Lighting questions, answered by experts

Yes, outdoor lights and receptacles should be on a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) for safety. The outdoors is considered a wet location where GFCI protection is generally required. A GFCI enhances safety by automatically tripping and shutting off the circuit if it detects an imbalance, which protects against electrocution and reduces the risk of an electrical fire. While it is the safest approach for all outdoor electrical components, specific requirements can vary depending on the type of light (e.g., pool lights), its location, and local electrical codes. For guidance tailored to your specific situation, it's best to consult a professional electrician.

There are tons of different types of landscape lighting available, including the choice between solar and wired, incandescent and LED, and a variety of colors. Specific types of lighting include:

  • Pathway lights: $50–$150 per fixture

  • String lights: $50–$150

  • Low-voltage lights: $90–$150 per fixture

  • Porch lights: $65–$250 per fixture

  • Floodlights: $75–$250 per fixture

  • Downlights: $100–$400 per fixture

  • Uplights: $100–$400 per fixture

  • Security lights: $ 350–$500 per fixture

  • Lamp posts: $400–$1,100 per lamp post

Inspect for burnt-out bulbs, secure connections, and protect from water exposure to maintain functionality.

No, you should not leave LED Christmas lights up all year. While the LED lights themselves are very durable, their wiring and casings can be as vulnerable as any Christmas lights. They’re subject to drying out, experiencing cold or sun damage that causes them to crack, and even damage caused by gnawing pests. (The same is true of incandescents.) If you want your lights to last the years that they’re rated for, bring them inside after Christmas is over.

High-quality landscape lights that are hardwired and properly maintained can last for 10 to 25 years or more. You’ll usually get a longer lifespan from soffit lights and wall-mounted lights that aren’t directly exposed to the elements or prone to damage from foot traffic or vehicle traffic. Solar-powered and battery-powered lights often won’t last as long, but you can still expect a lifespan of five to 15 years.
