"No cheap, but extremely thorough in cleaning and preparing our deck for staining. Because of the weather we are only half way through the job, but we are very impressed."

"Pro Painters did an excellent job correcting a previous re-stain job gone wrong. First, Pro Painters responded to my query promptly and scheduled a no-cost estimate immediately. Second, Benard showed up on time and gave me an insightful analysis of the problems with the prior job and how to correct it. The written estimate came promptly after, via email. Third, he returned when promised to review the job specs with me and his crew captain. Fourth--and most important: I was out of town when the crew performed the job, but Benard kept me posted and agreed to accept payment (a) once I returned to town and (b) if I was pleased with the job. Talk about trust! I'm so pleased with the new stain--I can tell at a glance and touch that it's been applied properly, unlike the previous job. Second: Benard and his team had to replace several worn and rotting planks (because the prior job peeled prematurely and left the wood exposed for months to 2018-19's punishing snow and rain), and the deck is now sturdier, as it should've been. Throughout the process, Pro Painters communicated with me clearly, directly, promptly. They execute their work with precision and care. I paid a lot ($1700) for this job to be done 2 years ago; I collected 2 other bids for the re-do that came in significantly less than Pro Painters. But their professionalism and, now, I see, execution makes me confident that the extra money was well worth it. I recommend Pro Painters highly."

"We couldn't have been more pleased with the quality of the service and the work that was done. General Painting is a professionally run operation; we appreciated the attention to detail that was evident from the job estimate, contract and follow through on promises. Ours is an old shingled farm house that needed the wood shingle to be stained and the trim to be painted. The prep work they did was impressive and the crew was unfailingly polite and responsive to any concerns or directives. We will be using them again for interior work in the near future!!! We whole heartedly recommend them."

"Esteban Vazquez the owner of Taurus Painting is extremely courteous, hard working and efficient. I have lived in the CT area for 13 yrs and have had my house painted 3 X and never have i had such a fantastic job! Esteban went beyond just painting in fixing rotten wood etc. He started when he said he would, worked from 8-5 everyday and finished when EVERYTHING was painted (actually stained) His entire crew was polite and hard working. If I could have rated him a 10, I would have! Taurus Painting deserves an A++++++"

"Brilliantly. The guys worked around tricky weather conditions and worked 2 days straight when the weather cleared. They moved all the porch furniture and actually spent one whole day on detailed sanding and prepping the porch floor for the painting. They are polite, friendly and extremely careful and neat. I plan to have them back this winter to paint the inside of my house. There were 3 painters"

"I have a large deck with a grape vine top. It was in dire need of repairs(washing, sanding, replacing rotted wood, staining) I called J. Corrigan from Angie's list. He arrived estimated and I contracted with him. His team arrived and an excellent job was performed in the amount of time given. I will be calling them again for other projects. "Thanks Joe and team for a job well done.""

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Wood stain is typically dry to the touch within 6 to 12 hours, but it is not fully cured at this point. You should wait at least 24 hours before applying a second coat or a protective finish. For surfaces like decks, avoid walking on them for at least 24 to 48 hours, and wait even longer before placing furniture. The full curing process can take from 24 hours to one week, depending on the type of stain. Factors like high humidity and cold temperatures can extend drying and curing times, so it's wise to allow for extra time in these conditions.

Satin paint is generally considered a better choice for woodwork—including trim, baseboards, cabinets, and doors—than flatter finishes like eggshell or matte. Its soft sheen enhances architectural details and stands up well to frequent cleaning and daily wear. Compared to eggshell and matte finishes, satin is more durable for high-touch areas because it is less porous and doesn't absorb dirt as easily. Matte finishes, in particular, are prone to scuffs and are harder to clean, making them less practical for surfaces like doors and cabinets.

The opposite is actually true: Wood stains tend to appear lighter when they’re fully dry. However, stains may darken as they weather and oxidize with age. Stains might also darken on surfaces left in direct sunlight, as UV rays can break down pigment particles and cause them to darken over time.

Your tool of choice ultimately comes down to personal preference. Many DIYers prefer applying stain with a lint-free rag, but others stick with a paint brush or a roller. Wipe the stain and work it into the wood, working with and against the grain. If you’re applying multiple coats, allow the stain to dry for around four hours between coats.

The best paint for an older deck depends on the material and whether or not your deck already has a coat of paint. Generally, if your deck already has paint on it, you should choose the same type of paint when repainting the deck. For example, if an old deck has oil-based paint on it, stick with oil; if your deck has water-based paint, choose water-based paint.
