"In renovating our beach cottage in Warwick, RI we found the roof needed structural work. Building inspector required a structural engineered plan. Adam was easy to communicate with. He was timely with his plan and follow up inspection. He was also available by text and phone for questions during the project. He was great to work with!"

"I am a contractor that has used ZS design for years now. Every job that I have done ZS has been available on a very level available. Their knowledge goes beyond just providing drawings. They are willing to work with you step by step as a question come about and any issues during the build occur. It’s nice to be able to make a quick call and they are immediate available. Highly recommend their services to builders/contractors and especially home owners who at times have trouble finding that necessary first step to begin their projects."

"If I could have given Valerio 10 stars I would have! Excellent, Professional and Contentious Architect. Valerio spent the time to really understand what we were looking to accomplish. We made a couple of changes (even some with his suggestions) and he was quick to help with these ideas. It was a great experience and the final product left no questions to be answered!"

"I usually try to not say anything in these situations, unless I can say something nice. But I hired Lynne for a complicated remodel of an old house, and had numerous problems related to the inadequacy of the design. The complex things that needed figuring out (such as the entire attic) were stamped "verify in field" on the plans. After numerous queries, she kept assuring me that the builder could figure it all out. But that was not the case. Some things were just flat-out wrong. Like persuading me that ridge vents alone would solve ice damming. She is a very nice person, but her skills are probably better suited to new construction."

"PegArch, LLC was hire for architectural plans, drawings, and construction assistance with a major home project. We found Mathew to be very easy to work with. He'd draw up some plans, review the plans with us, then modify the plans based on our feedback. He then kept in contact with City Planning officials, us, and the Contractor. He provided the plans to our Contractor. He visited the job site several times and noticed a problem with a dormer installation that was not being installed in the manner specified by his plans. He met with us and the Contractor on the job site , then made arrangements to correct the problem. I received compliments from City officials on Mathew's professionalism and great follow through, holding him in the highest regard. We also feel very lucky to have met and worked with Matthew Pegolo, as he is the most honest and helpful Professional we have ever encountered! Highly Recommended!"

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

Costs depend on material choices, labor, and the extent of structural modifications.

The 10 10 rule describes the formula most contractors use to determine how much to charge for a job. Allowing for 10% overhead above the total projected cost to do the work and 10% profit sets a contractor up for success, even if there are delays or other problems on the project. This formula isn’t a hard-and-fast rule, but it is a ballpark figure to begin with when estimating your expenses on a job.

The National Association of Home Builders requires repair of any foundation crack of more than one quarter of an inch, although local regulations may vary. In general, any visible crack that is growing in size, allowing water through, or that you have just noticed, is a good reason to call a structural engineer. Cracks can be a sign of a sinking foundation, so an inspection is a good idea for your peace of mind.

If you intend to do the majority of the work yourself, you can pay to hire an architect or a structural engineer to ensure your home remains structurally sound. They can help with the planning to make sure everything is up to code and safe for your family. On the other hand, if you’re not sure your home will be completely safe when you’ve completed the project, let a pro do the job.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.
