"Mike re-wired my basement outlets at my apartment. He figured out that all of them were wired incorrectly. Not only did he restore power to my basement outlets, he prevented an electrical fire from the previous incorrect wiring. He also installed a new bathroom fan/light combo, with Bluetooth speaker capabilities and multiple led light colors. He was efficient, fairly priced and honest. Highly recommend! Thank you again Mike!"

"The owner Chris was fantastic and answered my calls and questions in record time, came out quickly for an estimate. Once great price was agreed on, he arrived on time with his staff to get started. This is an old house which I'm sure gave them some challenges, but they efficiently went about their business and answered all my questions, got the job done, left everything clean and made sure I was satisfied. Kudos to Will and Aimee! I would highly recommend and will definitely use Calkins Electric again for my next project."

"Kevin has been doing electrical work for us for about a decade, first upgrading the electrical ststem in our 1920s bungalow in Willimantic, and then coming out numerous times to update various elements in our historic home in Chaplin. He's great to work with, no- nonsense, thoughtful about creating safe solutions for our older house, including a generator installation. A nice person and a true professional."

"William Burden is the third generation owner of WBLightningRods and his company has been in business since 1950. He is very courteous, professional, was on time, and has a very good crew. William was present for the entire installation. We chose the copper system. We are glad for the peace of mind a lightning rod system will provide."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

In most cases, there are no tax credits available for home generators. However, that’s a general statement that applies to federal tax credits, so you might have access to state or local tax incentives. You can check the Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency (DSIRE) for more information about your area. If you hire a reliable home generator installer, they should also know if there are any state or local perks you can use to reduce your installation costs, including tax breaks and rebates.

Most homeowners won't be able to claim a home generator as a tax write-off. However, a whole-house generator may be tax-deductible in certain situations depending on its purpose. For instance, if it's needed to power essential medical equipment, it may qualify as a medical expense deduction. Also, in some cases, businesses can deduct a generator as a business expense if it supports operations. Always consult a tax professional to determine eligibility based on your specific circumstances and the applicable IRS regulations.

Here’s what you can run with different wattages and types of generators:

Portable generator:

  • 2,000 watts can handle a large appliance like a freezer or refrigerator, plus a few smaller items like phones or computer chargers.

  • 4,000 watts will keep two large appliances operating and a few smaller devices.

  • 8,000 watts should power most essential appliances and other devices, including a sump pump, well pump, or your dishwasher.

Partial to whole-house generator:

  • 20,000 watts and above will make it seem like your home’s power is still on.

The average cost to install a home generator is $5,200, but total costs can range from $500 to $18,000 or more. The final price depends on several factors, including the generator's size, type, brand, fuel source, and the cost of labor and assembly. The generator's size is the most significant cost factor, as units that can power larger homes with higher energy demands cost more.

Cost breakdowns by generator type are typically as follows:

  • Portable or Emergency Backup Generators (1kW–7.5kW): $500–$2,000

  • Partial-Home Generators (9kW–20kW): $2,000–$6,500

  • Whole-House Generators (22kW–48kW): $5,000–$18,000

To ensure you get the right size unit for your needs without overpaying, consider hiring an electrician to calculate the electrical load of your essential appliances. It is also recommended to get at least three quotes from qualified installers to find the best fit for your budget.

Whole-house generators can run continuously for extended periods, even for weeks at a time (around 400 to 500 hours), as long as they have a sufficient fuel supply. However, this type of extensive use will increase wear and tear and can shorten the generator's overall lifespan. During long periods of operation, it's important to check and refill the engine oil as needed, potentially as frequently as daily depending on the model. If your generator uses a fuel tank, ensure it is kept full to prevent unexpected shutdowns.
