"I got four bids for asbestos abatement of all the drywall and some flooring in my home in preparation for a gut renovation. In contrast to all the other companies, Allen and David did not attempt to nickel and dime me. The other bidders charged based on the square footage of asbestos to be removed, which as you can imagine, added up quickly. They also nitpicked about fixture removal, and the highest bidder even said he would have to leave the drywall behind the baseboard heaters. Oak Environmental explained that the major cost of asbestos abatement is in the set-up and cleaning. So leaving one wall wouldn't save me that much because, after the setup, it's just standard demo work. As you might imagine, just based on their bidding strategy, Oak Environmental's bid was significantly less than the other bidders and they were absolutely great to work with. I cannot say enough good things about this company. I honestly have no idea how the other guys can be in business based upon their bidding strategy, although I have to assume that most asbestos removal companies know that they can get away with overbidding jobs because the majority of them do it. You will not regret going with Oak Environmental!"

Basement Waterproofing questions, answered by experts

Unfortunately, mold can grow pretty much anywhere, on any kind of surface. However, you’re most likely to see it in damp areas like basements or bathrooms, as well as anywhere there has been a water leak. Consult a local mold specialist to determine if certain areas of your home are prone to mold based on climate and other factors.

No, you don’t want your crawl space to be wet because water and even moisture in the air under your home can attract insects and rodents, decrease your indoor air quality, increase your energy bills, promote mold growth, and even lead to structural damage. If you notice any signs of water or humidity in your crawl space, you should get the issues addressed immediately by contacting a professional. They can remove moisture and will know how to waterproof your basement to prevent ongoing problems.

A sump pump can remove excess moisture from under a house if standing water is present. Other ways to protect your crawl space from moisture include installing a vapor barrier, using a dehumidifier, installing insulation, and using a fan to dry the space. Finally, keeping your gutters clear of debris and positioning your downspouts away from the home’s foundation can prevent moisture from getting into the crawl space in the first place.

No, your basement dehumidifier doesn’t need to be on 24/7. While it’s an excellent tool for tackling damp, musty air, especially in humid seasons, leaving it running nonstop can backfire. Over-drying the space can mess with your sinuses, warp wood, and even crack certain materials. Instead, only use your humidifier when moisture levels rise above 50%, and then give it a break when the humidity levels drop.

Yes, you can finish a basement that leaks, as long as you address the leak first. Before finishing a basement, you’ll need to repair any cracks in the walls and waterproof the basement to prevent future leaks. It’s much harder to clean up a water leak from a finished basement than an unfinished one, so preemptively addressing any leaking areas prevents expensive repairs in the future.
