"Utilizing All Service Moving for the move was a very positive experience. They had good communication, answering several questions prior to the move and did a final confirmation just prior to the move date. As for the physical move itself, Jose, Abraham, and Alberto were polite, diligent, and careful moving the many items, and managed to complete the move more quickly than anticipated."

"Alex and Jesus from Road Runner Moving & Storage did a fantastic job. They were hardworking and very professional. They asked questions along the way to make sure everything was going as expected. Honestly, I couldn't have asked for a better moving experience, I am very glad we used Road Runner and would definitely use this crew (specifically Alex & Jesus!) again. Highly recommended."

"I was extremely stressed about my move. My original plan was to enlist friends to help me move, but I had a lot of heavy furniture. I called Nationwide Movers the day I was moving! They were there in a few hours. They were quick, very organized, professional, and overall simply amazing! I would tell anybody to hire them if they need a moving service! To the guys who moved me, THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN!"

"He and his team did an amazing job moving us out of our third floor apartment to a storage unit. We were so impressed with their professionalism that we will be requesting the same moving company to move us into our new house. The entire move was so easy and hassle free."

"The gentleman we friendly and courteous and miraculously got furniture into an apartment that was designed poorly for moving in/out. However, I felt the pace was slow and I was uncertain about their experience/knowledge with moving. They did a good job but I wouldn't jump at the opportunity to recommend this company simply because the time it takes affects the cost of the move."

"This was an internal building move, one household into two separate apartments. They quickly and carefully moved everything much faster than I thought they would. The three employees worked well together. I have already recommended Gentle John’s Moving to our building management."

Moving questions, answered by experts

Ultimately, the best option for your cross-country move depends on your budget, timeline, and the level of convenience you want. For a speedy and hassle-free experience, you can spend a bundle on full-service movers who take care of everything from packing to transport. Budget-friendly options include container services that allow you to pack your stuff at your leisure.

There are different types of moving companies, and you’ll want to look for one that has experience moving houses. Ask them how many houses they’ve moved, how long they’ve been in business, whether they coordinate all of the labor, permits, and subcontractors needed, and what their liability is for any damages incurred.

Renting a moving truck or using a shipping container (or moving pod) are typically the cheapest ways to move long-distance. For moving a few items, a container can cost as little as $700. Renting a standard-sized moving truck averages between $1,200 and $2,100. For longer distances, moving pods can become more cost-effective, as you can ship the pod to your destination and avoid transportation costs like gas, mileage, and lodging.

Disassembling a shed before you move it could save space and ease the process of loading it onto a moving vehicle. However, you should only disassemble it if it was designed for the possibility of re-building it at your new home. Consult the original process and materials required to build the shed in the first place when considering this option.

Start by removing any obstacles in the moving path, such as side tables, lamps, or other furniture. If your couch has legs, unscrew them. Measure the couch and the stairway to ensure you have enough room; if it seems unlikely, examine the shape and size of the couch and decide whether it might fit better up the stairway and through doorways on its side, held diagonally, or moved in an upright position.

Consider putting the sofa on a dolly to go up the stairs. It should be able to fit upright on a standard dolly with wheels. You’ll still need to lift the dolly—with the couch on it—up the stairs, but it will reduce the physical strain. The person holding the dolly should pull the couch up, while the helper should be on the other side, keeping the couch secure and steady.

If you don’t have a dolly, the person in front should lift the couch slightly higher than the person in the back to create more stability. The person in the back should also be the stronger mover, as most of the weight will be distributed there.
