First, reseal your driveway every one to three years to protect it from the elements. Whether you should resurface or replace your asphalt driveway heavily depends on its condition. If the foundation is solid and the damage is minor, resurfacing is your best bet because it’s more affordable and faster than replacing the driveway. But if your driveway has foundational problems and/or severe damage, like large, deep cracks and potholes, then it makes more sense to replace it. 

Asphalt is made of aggregate materials (sand, rocks, and gravel) and bitumen, a viscous, petroleum-based, waterproof substance. These materials are mixed together at extremely high temperatures to form asphalt.

You should always power wash your driveway before applying a sealant. At any given time, your driveway could be covered with algae and moss, tire residue, oil and rust stains, and any combination of leaves, twigs, and dirt. If you skip power washing, you’ll be trapping the dirt and grime beneath the sealant and lowering its chance of cementing itself to your driveway. While you can expect the cost to pressure wash your driveway to average between $100 and $350, the few hundred dollars beats an unattractive driveway or paying extra to reapply your driveway sealer.

It is not recommended to seal brand-new asphalt immediately. You should wait at least three months after installation to allow the asphalt time to cure properly. Applying a seal coat too soon can trap the asphalt's oils and chemicals, preventing it from fully hardening. This can result in a weaker surface that is more susceptible to damage. After the three-month curing period, sealing the asphalt is beneficial as it can extend its lifespan by protecting it from water, UV rays, and other damaging elements.
