"JD Remodeling did an outstanding job in our new to us house. All the workers were very courteous and made every attempt to keep the house as clean as possible while doing a messy job - dry wall work is never without a mess. We are very happy with the end results."

"JVI services, in a word, were outstanding.  What an impressive job that Dominic provided us.
We gave them a very challenging project, namely:
1)
Replace our front room, dining room and kitchen with hardwood floor,
marrying it to exactly match the existing foyer entrance hardwood floor
look and color.
2)  Replace all the carpet in the main and second floor of the house
3)  Paint the entire house
4)  Do all this in one week, prior to us moving into the house.
Dominic
coordinated all of the work across multiple sub-contractors and all of
it was done on time, with great detail and quality and with totally
professional workers and management.  We could not be more pleased and
we are using Dominic on future efforts as well.  I cannot recommend him
and his subcontractors more.  He really works with you to achieve and
exceed your expectations.
Regards,
Bill and Gretchen B.

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Yes, walls on the top floor can be load-bearing if stacked on the floor’s foundation.

Balcony construction or replacement typically requires a building permit from your local permitting authority. Safety and building integrity are the main reasons for the need to obtain a permit and the subsequent inspections. In some cases, especially cantilevered balconies, your municipality may also require the oversight and signature of a structural engineer.

Most of the time, you’ll want to use screws on your subfloor rather than nails. Nails can actually weaken plywood, whereas screws can easily penetrate without damage. They also form a more secure connection because of their shape, preventing squeaky floors and tightly holding the subfloor in place. That said, some contractors do prefer nails depending on the type of floor covering because they allow for more flexibility.

Yes, a 2x6 should hold a porch swing and safely support the load. A smaller joist runs the risk of it not offering enough support for the swing. If you have a joist smaller than 2x6, add additional bolstering support.

One of the most common house framing basics for decades has been using wood for the framing work. However, some framing contractors now suggest using steel frames. Steel is lightweight, resistant to fire, and resistant to moisture, all of which are areas where wood framing could cause problems. However, steel framing is more expensive than wood and limits your ability to insulate the home.
