"Stephen was great to work with every step of the way. I completely remodeled my kitchen and mud room in an older house with some unique dimensions. Early on he had great suggestions about products, cabinet design, and rearrangement of the old kitchen layout to improve layout and space. It gave me lots of things to consider including several that I hadn't even thought of. During the process, he accurately estimated the time frame of construction, and was very communicative in terms of letting me know every day when he would arrive. He also involved me in all of the small decisions during construction as they came up and discussed the pros/cons of each option. There was a fair bit of customized cabinetry installation that was needed due to existing walls not being straight and on-site design. The end result looks great with straight lines and everything flush. I'm really pleased with the end result!"

Remodel Design questions, answered by experts

There are several different steps in the pole barn building process. First, you’ll need construction plans, which you’ll use to obtain permits. Then, you can clear the land so it’s suitable for building and installing the foundation. Your contractor will frame the barn using large poles, then rough in the plumbing and electricity (if your barn has those elements) before finishing the interior, adding siding, and installing the roof.

After that, they’ll finish up the electrical work and plumbing and add your windows and doors. You may have a few other finishing jobs to do like painting or waterproofing.

You can draw your own house plans using three-dimensional modeling software, but in most cases, you’ll need an architect to draw up the final plans. Architects understand local building regulations and requirements, so their plans will be necessary for getting permits approved, and they’ll also ensure your home is structurally sound. DIY house plans can be a good place to start to help visualize your project, but you should always defer to a professional before trying to proceed with the project.

Federal architecture is most common in urban areas throughout the New England states, including the older parts of New York, Pennsylvania (namely, Boston and Philadelphia), Maryland, Massachusetts, and Virginia. The style also dominated in parts of Georgia in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, so many historical homes in the area embody this home design. Salem, MA, has two historic districts that predominantly feature this architectural style: Chestnut Street District and the Salem Maritime National Historic Site.

Dekton is worth the money for homeowners who want a nonporous countertop that resists heat, stains, water, scratches, and UV damage. It comes in a wide array of colors and patterns at various price points to suit different renovation budgets. Dekton is not worth the cost for homeowners who are particularly worried about chipping or cracking.

Costs vary depending on project complexity and scope. Architects generally charge a percentage of the total budget or an hourly rate for their services.
