"I asked Rusty to come out to see my deck and discuss what maintenance and repair needs to be done now to help the deck last. I showed him what I thought my problem areas and concerns were. He reassured me that my deck was in better shape than I thought and pointed out a few boards that should be replaced. The best part was he gave me a great education and advice about what I can do to take better care of my deck going forward - not just what to do, but what not to do as well. Very friendly and professional. I really appreciated his time and expert advice."

"I hired the Paint Doctor to paint the exterior of our house as well as to stain our redwood deck. Chris Dorry was the estimator and primary contact. He was very knowledgeable and professional. They also provided some exterior wood replacement in weathered areas. The painters were always very punctual and worked everyday until the job was completed. Chris also set me up with a Sherwin Williams color consultant who provided valuable advice and help in finalizing our colors. Would definitely hire them again!"

"Ronald D McElfresh dba RD's Services was a little expensive for me because I am retired, so I can't pay as much as other people, my sprinkling system had to be repaired and he repaired it very well in the back and he even dug up a sprinkler head to do it. What happened to me is that I had 2 bare patches in my front parking, they were quite large and I lost my grass here in the drought last year and I need to replant there, but he told me that I have too many sprinkler heads in my front yard and I told him that was because I had too many people work on it and they tried to solve the problem by too many heads in. I asked him if he tried to block some of them off because the other sprinklers had to try and take over and I was at the point of paying him the second time he came. He didn't try to take the sprinkler heads down to a lesser amount and so, that very place where the two bare spots are is the very place where there is no water heating, so I am going to have that repaired again and it was over USD 500 that I had paid him. I will have to have somebody come and remove the extra sprinklers, so he was right out the fact that I had too many sprinklers and I agreed with him, but he didn't try to change that and he didn't ask me if I wanted him to. I am disabled, so I couldn't run downstairs to check, but I did ask him if the two sprinklers in the front parking were reaching each other, so that I can get those bare spots covered and he said that they were, but as time went on in the last few weeks, there is just not enough pressure to cover those two spots, and so something else needed to be done. That is the only thing that didn't go right. The thing was that he charged me quite a bit for what he did and I asked him if he tried to block the others off and he didn't answer me, I never made a statement to him about the fact that I couldn't go over a certain amount and so he wasn't restricted in having time to do it because I paid him by the hour. It did turn out to be USD 30 an hour, and that was one of the things that has been bugging me for a year and so it must have been one of the first things that I mentioned when he came, it was very obvious because we have 2 big bare patches on the ground. We have to hand water it and we have to reseed it but the sprinklers aren't reaching well. He was very nice and we got along well but it was just that it wasn't going to do any good to work on everything else on the front yard, if it wasn't going to cover that spot. I asked him what else he did and he said he puts rock in yards and I told him that I don't like rock. Some people may have had 100% satisfaction with him but for me, I can't do the watering myself, so I can't do the hand watering and so I had to have that fixed so that if I turned the sprinkler on, it would cover it. I think the price was high for the thing that I needed done and I think he overcharged me. He fixed some other things for me okay but he didn't do anything about the front lawn. He did a good job on whatever sprinklers he replaced, it is just that he didn't want to get rid of some sprinkler heads to help with the pressure. He responded well, but he didn't come through on the job. He was pretty punctual on everything and he had another job but he found a way to get here although he skipped a couple days.  I won't use him again because my money is limited and I paid him right away, it took me so long to get the money together to get the job done. For that price, he should have tried to get some of my sprinkler heads off.  He blamed it on the pipes that came onto the front yard, I can't blame that because all the rest of the sprinklers are covering the other parts."

"I needed someone to powerwash and stain my 3000 sq. ft. of stockade fencing. I couldn't find anyone in the area to do it, and finally found Paul's Bucket Truck. He gave me a more than fair price and he and his men did an excellent job. I asked him to haul away debris that I had cleaned out of the easement behind my house as well as old fence boards that I had replaced before he did the fence staining. He took care of all of that as well for a little extra $$. I was very pleased with his service and the work of his men. I would recommend them and use his services again for other jobs that I can't handle myself. Ed"

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

It is possible to build your own deck, but it’s typically better to leave the work to a decking professional. Decks can be exceptionally complicated, especially if you want a wrap-around or second-story deck, and you don’t want to risk making an expensive or dangerous mistake. It’s usually better to hire a decking pro who can pull permits and build a structurally sound deck that will last for decades and provide the maximum return on investment.

The most likely causes of a deck leaning to one side are damaged deck posts, soil erosion, and inadequate deck footings. If you’re not sure about the exact cause, the best option is to call a contractor who can build a deck to inspect the damage and recommend the best way forward.

The best material for your deck depends on several factors, including your budget, location, aesthetic preferences, and the level of maintenance you’re willing to do. Wood decking, like redwood, ipe, cedar, and pine, lasts the longest, but it’s more expensive and requires more upkeep than composite and synthetic decking.

Deck stairs should have at least three stringers rather than two. The recommended minimum width for stairs is 36 inches, and the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors recommends at least three cut stringers to provide sufficient support on wood decking stairs of this width. Generally, stringers should be a maximum of 16 inches apart for wood decking and 12 inches apart for more flexible composite decking.

Both deck footings and deck posts help prop up your deck. However, footings are the bottommost parts of a deck that touch the ground. They’re usually made of concrete. Posts are pieces of wood that attach to the top of the footings with brackets. They run upwards and connect to the underside of your deck to support its weight.
