"./I needed a custom cabinet to fit in odd-shaped corner of my bathroom.  I wanted it to match and look consistent with the other cabinets (which were not custom, and stopped when they got near the odd-shaped corner).  Albert from GC Woodworking came out to do an estimate.  He understood exactly what I was looking for.  He asked me some questions that I hadn't thought about.  (Like the toe kick.)   He took very detailed measurements of all the different dimensions where the cabinet would have to fit.  He gave me a price quote.  He would build the cabinet at his shop, then bring it out and install it.   He said he would have it ready and would be available to come back and install in about 10-14 days.  We agreed, and I paid him 50% upfront.
He called me back a week later to say the cabinet was ready, and we set up a date and time for him to come back to install it.  On the installation day, he did end up about an hour late, but it he called to let me know he was stuck in traffic.  (It was raining in Los Angeles that day, so traffic becomes completely unpredictable.)  It did not bother me that he was late; because of the rain and because he had called to tell me know.
Anyway, he came with two of his guys.  (I don't think the job really needed Albert plus two more people.  One guy seemed very new, like a trainee.  I think he was there to learn.)  The cabinet looked beautiful.  They put down some cardboard to protect the floor (even though the floor is stone and there really wasn't much risk of them hurting it, I thought that was good professionalism.  Little details like that say a lot about someone.)  Then they got to work.  I got out of the bathroom while they were doing the actual install.  There were some scary driilling and sawing and hammering noises coming from the bathroom.  I'll admit I got worried for a while that I was going to come in and see the bathroom looking like it had been demolished.  But I decided to just stay out of the way until they were finished.
When I saw the finished product, I was very pleased.  The new cabinet fits perfectly.in the odd-shaped corner.   The color and style matches the existing cabinets.  You would never know that the new cabinet was different.  (Unless you look very closely or start knocking/tapping on the wood.  In that case, you can tell that the new cabinet is built better than the old ones.)  Everything is solid and sturdy.  It makes a big difference in the appearance of the room.  (Oh, and his crew vacuumed up the work area.  No wood shavings or sawdust anywhere.)
I would definitely recommend Albert Goldin and GC Woodworking. I would use him again if I ever need cabinets built.  (It doesn't seem likely that I will need to have more cabinets built.  But if/when I do, I will call these guys.)

"We hired them for a challenging job that required removing kitchen cabinets to install a dishwasher and building a custom cabinet to match our existing units. Albert and his team did an amazing job. They were professional, thoughtful and they take obvious care in their woodworking. Would hire again."

"Ulisses was professional, friendly and answered all my questions before the work started. I had old cabinets and he did a good job fixing it and touching them up. Despite the late afternoon start, he didn't rush it and stayed until he felt it was done right."

"We found McCormick home builders through Angie’s list. They were not one of our original contacts, but they contacted us and came out to give us a quote. Matteo was extremely helpful, informative, honest, and gave us reasonable realistic prices, and did not try to inflate the prices or pressure us in anyway. We felt very comfortable with him immediately. We felt like he was a member of the family that we could just talk to and ask questions he was very personable. He gave us his contact number in case we had other questions and he was always available when we needed him for any type of questions or concerns. Mateo‘s team did a beautiful job. They were fast. They were efficient. They cleaned up beautifully. They did a wonderful job. They were very considerate of our time our needs and our neighbors. They were an absolute pleasure to work with. I would highly recommend Matteo from McCormick home builders for any home building projects, and we will be calling him again in the future!"

Cabinet Making questions, answered by experts

The 1/3 rule is a design guideline used by interior designers and cabinet installers to select appropriately sized pulls for cabinets and drawers. The rule suggests that for a balanced and cohesive look, a cabinet pull should be approximately one-third the height of the cabinet door or one-third the width of the drawer face. This guideline helps create a symmetrical appearance because the human eye tends to follow the length of the pull across the cabinet face.

While the 1/3 rule is a helpful starting point, it is not the only option. If a measurement falls between available pull sizes, it's generally best to size up. For an ultra-contemporary aesthetic, you can also opt for full-width pulls that span the entire drawer.

A medicine cabinet on its own won’t add a lot of value, but is in general considered to be a good feature to have. Since any added storage is desirable, a medicine cabinet can improve resale value some. Making your bathroom more functional is appealing to buyers if you’re looking to sell your home.

If your cabinets don’t reach the ceiling, you can extend them higher, adding visual interest, privacy, and storage space to your kitchen. Depending on the height of your ceiling, you may want to extend the structure of the cabinets and install longer doors to make each individual cabinet taller, or you could add additional cabinets above the existing ones. Either option is cheaper and easier than installing entirely new cabinets.

It is generally more cost-effective to purchase stock or semi-custom cabinets than to have them custom-built. The best option depends on your budget and customization needs.

Here is a breakdown of the average costs per linear foot:

  • Custom Cabinets: $500 to $1,200. The final price is influenced by factors like materials, size, and design complexity. For example, a basic slab cabinet door might cost $60 to $70 for materials, while a more intricate mullioned glass inset panel door can range from $100 to $200 per door.

  • Semi-Custom Cabinets: $150 to $700.

  • Stock Cabinets: $100 to $400. These are pre-built and the most affordable option, but they offer limited customization and may not be suitable for rooms with unusual shapes or high ceilings.

While having an assistant to help ensure safety and to lend a hand is desirable, if someone isn't around to assist, you can install kitchen cabinets on your own. Normal kitchen cabinet installation starts with the upper wall cabinets. If you're working on your own, consider installing the bases first and building a temporary support structure on top of them to help you install the uppers.
