"The site assessment and quote were extremely easy and transparent due to a slick app that itemizes the tree removal by type of tree/trunk diameter, with photos, then automatically generates a quote. The crew showed up right on time and were done on schedule. Super happy with the work and would recommend to anybody looking for tree removal services in the East Bay!"

"Green Lane was very reliable and professional. Franklin was very knowledgeable and we appreciated how he came to check in on the team during the service. In total they took care of 8 trees including a removal, done speedily and no mess left behind. Will be working with them again for any and all of our future tree related needs."

"They know their trees. They realized that a crown reduction of the ash tree would be better than getting rid of the dead branches. They did a good job reducing the branches on the date and time agreed upon. I would recommend Guardian for tree work"

Customers say: True professional

"Daniela was top notch. She made contact timely and estimate was reasonable. I could not be present, so she kept me in the loop via phone, text, and email. The estimate process was pleasant and professional. Daniela knew exactly what I needed and sent photos to clarify. The day of service, she called to announce when the crew arrived and started as well as updates and photos at time of completion. I couldn't be more satisfied. I will certainly use North Bay Tree Service again."

Tree Service questions, answered by experts

You don’t always need a permit to grind a stump, but you might need one depending on your location and the stump’s surroundings. Permits are often needed if the stump is part of a protected tree species, near public areas or utility lines, or close to environmentally sensitive zones like wetlands. Some cities also regulate noise and work hours. Always check local rules before grinding, and contact your city or county office if you're unsure.

A tree can grow back from its stump, but full regrowth is unlikely (especially for more stubborn conifer trees). Instead, trees are more likely to send up a number of shoots from the dead stump, which will try to develop into primary stems over time. In other words, it will start to look increasingly bushy. The goal of killing and drying out a tree stump is to prevent that from happening, as well as make the stump easier to completely remove.

Yes, cutting a tree's roots can cause it to fall, particularly if major support roots are severed. In extreme cases, trimming roots can affect the tree's structure and stability. Many crucial roots are located just below the soil's surface. If you make severe cuts to roots more than 2 inches in diameter, you risk impacting the tree's water flow and its ability to withstand severe winds or storms. Even cutting roots less than half an inch in diameter under or outside the tree's canopy can cut off its water supply, causing it to decline, die, and eventually topple.

Some trees, such as silver maples, birches, sycamores, and scotch pines, shed their bark naturally. If your tree is not one that does this, it might have fallen prey to pests, fungi, or diseases. It could also simply be suffering from an extreme weather change, such as a snowstorm or heat wave. If you’re still stumped, consulting with a pro can help you diagnose your tree’s specific problem.

There are a few general rules to follow that will help you prune your trees correctly. One of the most important rules is to prune during the correct season for the type of tree you have. Typically, pruning should be during late winter. For younger trees, you should not remove more than a ⅓ of the tree's crown when pruning. Also, remember to remove dead and diseased branches first, then proceed with pruning the rest of the tree.
