"Jonathan Kim is great! I have an antique upright Steinway grand piano that needed some woodwork because the previous owner had painted a part of it for some reason, so it didnâ t match the rest of the piano. The piece is actually a delicate lattice type wood on the face of the piano that is not produced any longer, but there are two matching sides; one was painted. Jonathan matched the stain exactly to the original, and it looks beautiful! Also, my piano was missing the music stand that should have been on the inside of the cover of the keyboard. I had nowhere to place music so I could read it when I played. A friend had tried to make one for me, but it just didnâ t fit the bill. Jonathan researched my 1878 piano, found what the original stand should look like, and reworked my friendâ s piece of wood so it not only perfectly matches the stain on the piano, but the angle and design of it is made perfectly so I can place music on it and play my piano while reading music again! AND, it looks exactly like the original piece that should have been there all along. He does excellent work. And on top of that, he is a very nice guy!!"

"Gabe and his team are great! I definitely will hire them again. Quality of work is outstanding. He did a stacked crown molding that gave our home a whole new look and probably added about 30k in value to the home."

Customers say: Quick response

"Mike was on time and quick on the draw for starting projects. We used him to finish the kitchen for us. I want to say that when he came in, our house was a disaster due to a plumbing leak in which insurance was working on with their contractor. Mike didn’t skip a beat, worked around everything and did a fantastic job on the backsplash and the can lights. I feel a little bad because I’m fairly talkative and I found several other projects for him after we decided we were listing the house. His work has been outstanding on every project so far and can tackle many jobs. He’s is about to start painting our house this week and has fixed several issues in the meantime. I would recommend Mike over and over."

"In spite of a break because he tested positive for covid, the Handy Juan completed the rebuilding and installation of my kitchen cabinets in a reasonable period of time. He accomplished exactly what I desired to be repaired. He communicated pleasantly and effectively. He left the area clean and in good order. I would gladly have him back for future projects."

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

No, you do not usually tip a carpenter for their work. However, if you’ve been very happy with the level of service and quality of work, a 10% to 20% tip would likely be accepted with thanks. If you’re not sure, it can help to discuss the carpenter’s policy or preference for tipping before beginning the project.

If you don’t have a power saw with a blade where you can adjust the angle, you could use a miter box and hand saw to make the cuts. The miter box contains wide slots to support the piece of baseboard and other narrow slots to accommodate the blade of the hand saw. However, it’s tough to make non-standard cuts beyond 30 or 45 degrees when using a miter box.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

Yes, carpenters can fix squeaky floors. They have the expertise to identify the source of the squeak, whether it’s loose floorboards, subfloor issues, or joist problems. These experts also have the right tools and hands-on knowledge to secure the flooring and eliminate the noise, ensuring a long-lasting solution.

Spindles on a deck may also be called balusters or pickets. While not as important to the structural support of the deck as the rail posts, they play a critical role in ensuring the deck is safe to use by closing in large gaps in the railing. For this reason, balusters must be no more than 4 inches away from one another.
