"I am ecstatic with the work Aviv and his team did for my townhouse! They did beautiful recessed lighting, added a step in my living room to get into my split level dining room, and retiled my fireplace. Aviv was so fast, so communicative, and gently walked me through the options with the utmost kindness and care. I will definitely be recommending them to all my friends!"

"I worked with Amit and team last year to remodel my 1970s condo bathroom. They completely gutted my bathroom and replaced everything in less than 2 weeks. When my bathtub was delayed they went out of their way to find one "nearby", was still an hour and a half away. My dad who has been in the tile business for 40+ years said they did an excellent job installing all of the tile. Would highly recommend Adar Builders to anyone!"

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

Building up by adding square footage to the top of your home is often less expensive than adding a basement, but it depends on the specifics of your house, your property, and supply costs. Because building a basement requires excavation, it can be a more expensive option than building up.

You technically can paint wires in a basement ceiling, but there are several important safety and code considerations. It's safe to paint non-metallic sheathed cable as long as the labeling remains visible. You can also paint low-voltage wires and conduit and junction boxes to help them blend into your basement.

However, you should not paint damaged or deteriorated wiring is a fire hazard because it poses a fire hazard. The same goes for painting over high-heat wires that connect to heat-generating appliances or systems. Be sure to avoid painting multiple coats onto any wires, as that traps heat and poses fire risks.

Although homeowners often use the terms basement remodeling and basement finishing interchangeably, they are quite different terms.

Finishing a basement is the process of taking a basement space that is not habitable and adding elements to make it usable. This includes adding plumbing, flooring, and insulation.

Remodeling a basement means taking an already existing finished basement and changing it, often by adding or removing walls, adding plumbing, or changing the existing flooring.

Since DIYing a basement remodel isn't typically advised, there are some ways that you can still save money on this project without putting yourself in danger. Some ways to save money on a basement remodel include:

  • Painting walls yourself versus including in the cost of the remodel

  • Installing light fixtures yourself

  • Choosing prefabricated fixtures, like cabinets, over custom ones

  • Choosing a budget-friendly flooring option, like laminate or vinyl flooring, and add rugs where necessary

Walkout basements are not generally included in a home’s square footage, although they may be if they meet certain conditions that depend on local regulations. A finished walkout basement used as a living space may be counted toward square footage in some locations as long as all codes for livable space are met.
