Customers say: Quick response

"Juan Chavez is an excellent tree trimming/removal specialist. He takes time to find out what you want for your trees & landscape. He is an excellent listener and also doesnâ t hesitate to make suggestions. He will consult with you again before beginning the work, and during the job if you have several trees (I had a very pitchy and lopsided pine to remove, and 11 incense cedars to limb up for wildfire abatement). He has a great management styleâ friendly, open to learning yet authoritative; careful yet efficient. He seemed to be an excellent boss to the 2 workers with him. My yard was complicated by having many bamboo stalks to remove in order to reach one of the cedarsâ which Juan & crew cheerfully dispatched. He was prompt for the estimate, and for the job. He gave me a precise estimate for removing the pine, and a very rough estimate for trimming the cedars & removing bamboo as needed. He stuck with the rough estimateâ he and crew completed the job by early afternoon."

"Mario’s crew were very professional and completed the job as requested. We had a large number of trees and bushes removed as well as all of their stumps ground. They cleaned up very well too. I found all of the workers to be present and communicated with me effectively. I’d fully recommend them to anyone !!"

"We had a massive diseased oak tree that needed to be taken down. Alex and his crew worked professionally to remove it for us. They also cleaned up a large redwood tree of dead limbs. Our property was left clear of debris. Alex gave us a great price & heâ  s easy to work with. We will use him again if needed."

"The young guy who did the work was prompt and professional, but not well trained. He power washed my patio BEFORE blowing the leaves and sticks off my roof, so all the debris landed on my just cleaned patio, and he didn't follow up to clean it off.
He forgot to do the garage door and was all packed up when he asked me to inspect, so I just let it ride.

"Just had to share what a GREAT job Family Tree Service did yesterday removing dead and dying trees on our property. They got the job done in a couple of hours, left the wood cut and neatly stacked for our use while taking away all the debris. Everything clean and tidy when they left. Highly recommend Family Tree Service! 🙂"

Arborists questions, answered by experts

You should not trim an oak tree in the summer. Oak trees are especially susceptible to disease, and open tree wounds are an invitation for beetles that carry tree-killing fungus. If there’s no risk that the oak tree will do damage to your property or hurt someone, it’s best to save the trimming for fall or winter. If you can, seal the wound with latex to prevent fungus from getting inside.

Poison oak is similar to poison ivy in that it's in the same family of plants. Poison oak is identifiable by its rounded-off leaves and hairy leaf texture. Tree-climbing varieties live primarily in western states while low-growing poison oak bushes occupy the eastern states. Treat poison oak like poison ivy to get rid of it permanently.

A grafted tree is a tree grown by combining two trees. It takes expertise. Branches from grafted trees don’t grow strong roots. Save yourself the time and frustration by having an arborist help you with this advanced project.

You can often tell if a tree is grafted because it will have a noticeable line. Above the line, the bark will look different than it does below the line. It’s most common with fruit trees.

Yes, healthy and well-placed large trees can boost property value by an average of 3% to 15%. They improve curb appeal, offer energy savings through shade and wind protection, and are often considered by appraisers during home valuation. On the flip side, removing dead or hazardous trees can also increase value by eliminating safety risks. For the biggest return, choose low-maintenance, native species that thrive in your climate.

A dead tree should always be cut down, because it could fall and cause injuries or damage, and it can also attract insects like carpenter ants. A tree that’s diseased beyond repair should also be cut down, but it’s not always easy for a homeowner to tell. Signs of disease include dying branches, a hollow trunk, leaning, and discolored or missing leaves, but your best bet is to hire a local arborist who can evaluate the tree and tell you if it can be saved or should be cut down.
