"Mario’s crew were very professional and completed the job as requested. We had a large number of trees and bushes removed as well as all of their stumps ground. They cleaned up very well too. I found all of the workers to be present and communicated with me effectively. I’d fully recommend them to anyone !!"

"I highly recommend Familia Chavez for anyone looking for professional tree service in Sonoma County, especially in the Santa Rosa area. Their crew came to our property to trim several extremely tall redwood trees—some approximately 200 feet high. They safely climbed high into the trees and removed around 20 large branches, carefully lowering everything to the ground. They then chipped all the branches and debris and did an excellent job cleaning up the property afterward. The entire crew was friendly, skilled, and professional. They listened closely to what we wanted, explained how the work would be done, and made sure every branch we requested was properly trimmed. We felt confident that the work was being handled safely and responsibly from beginning to end. Uriel, the owner, was especially courteous and attentive. He made sure the project was completed properly and even returned after the work was finished to ask how everything went and confirm that we were satisfied."

"Carlos is a delightful person who is willing to work collaboratively and creatively. His rates are very reasonable and he is good at helping you fit your dream into your budget. He has a little trouble staying on top of complex work, especially when it involves subcontractors, but the wait is worth it. We are more than pleased with the extensive work he did for us and our landscaping is the envy of the neighborhood."

"Jesus and his crew were great! They did what they came to do when they said they'd come with minimal hiccups and no hidden costs. Jesus was professional, friendly, and very easy to work with. He knows his stuff and he listens and responds with no repeats or hounding! And, his crew was amazing. They were safe, professional, and efficient and the site was left nearly spotless after they were done removing eight large cypress trees and trimming a ninth large cypress. We will definitely contact them for future landscape and tree trimming work. Thank you Black Forest Enterprises!!!"

Arborists FAQs, answered by experts

A general rule is that trees need 10 gallons of water for each inch of the tree’s diameter. For large trees, that can amount to approximately 160 gallons of water or more. Watering big trees to this extent can take quite a bit of time using a hose. For this reason, you may consider installing a soaker hose or sprinkler system to make the job easier.

There are four common ways to prune a tree correctly: crown thinning, crown reduction, crown raising, and crown cleaning. The method you choose depends on the purpose of pruning. However, making the correct cuts is a vital part of the process, regardless of your method. Pruning incorrectly can damage or even kill the tree. So, you may want to hire a professional tree-trimming company to tackle the task.

The felling notch you make before you make the final cut will determine which way the tree will fall. The cut will be in a wedge or triangle, and the tree will fall from the highest point of the triangle. You can use this, as well as the process described above, to estimate where a tree will fall.

You’ll have to balance up the cost, the value of the tree (sentimental or otherwise), and the risk factors. An experienced arborist will help you understand whether transplanting is likely to be successful. The cost and hassle of transplanting a large, well-established tree are often not worth it, especially if the species is fast-growing and easy to source. The decision depends on the age and species of the tree, the conditions in the new site location, and how careful the company is when digging out and moving the tree.

Rock salt or Epsom salt can damage and kill tree roots over several weeks and can even assist in removing the tree's stump. However, you need to drill holes or cut into the stump and surface tree roots to inject them properly with the salt. Repeat the process every two weeks until the roots visibly rot away.
