"My parents installed a Kinetico water softener in 1989 and continued to have it serviced for 22 years. It worked very well and the customer service was always excellent. (I stopped using the system about 5 years ago not knowing how necessary it was) Unfortunately, I recently found out that our well is contaminated with extremely high levels of nitrates and our water hardness has skyrocketed (compared to the levels we had in the past). With these changes in our water I am having a new system installed. Since we had such a great experience with Kinetico in the past I immediately called and set an appointment. Damian Fernandez came out and tested our water. He thoroughly explained each test in an easy to understand manner and answered all my questions. He also explained the effects our hard water is having on our home and most importantly the effects it is having on our health. I knew the nitrates were dangerous but I had no idea that the hard water was most likely the reason my hair was falling out at an alarming rate as well as why I have developed skin issues in the last several years. Products that I have used since I was a child I suddenly became allergic to, laundry detergents in particular. Not just that, I also have eczema now as well. : ( Damian went through the various system options and helped us find something that worked within our budget. He was very professional and helpful. I feel confident that the system he helped us choose will provide our family with SAFE, clean water for many years. Do your research and you will find that when it comes to water softening/purification Kinetico's systems are by far the best. Their excellent customer service is the icing on the cake."

"My house is a bit older so I’m now having issues with my faucets, washing machine, and kitchen appliances. Kitchen: My kitchen faucet just gave up on me after 30 yrs and I had to replace it. Called Pipe System and Solutions and I bought the replacement and they were able to install. It was a bit tight underneath my sink and not a lot of room so it took a little bit of time. Nicely done and clean install. Unfortunately my garbage disposal died 2 weeks later and since they did an amazing job with my faucet I hired them to do my garbage disposal. It was quick and workmanship was great. Kids Bathroom: I didn’t realize I had a major leak on my shower head. The shower head was shooting water on my wall and basically ruined it. I bought the new shower head and they replaced it for me. They also redid the small sheet rock over the shower head. I definitely recommend. Very knowledgeable, cleans after themselves and reasonably priced."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

The primary difference between a water softener and a water filter lies in what they remove from the water. A water softener is designed to remove hard minerals like calcium and magnesium. In contrast, a water filter has a broader effect, removing various contaminants above a certain size, which can include bacteria and other impurities.

To decide which you need, consider your goal. If you want to eliminate hard minerals, choose a softener. If you want to remove a wide range of contaminants, a filter is the better option. Filters are also generally less expensive to install. Depending on your water supply, you may need to install both for comprehensive treatment.

Whether you need a license or permit for water softener installation depends on your location. Some municipalities require the installer to hold a plumbing license, while others may only require a permit and an inspection. In some cases, both a permit and a licensed installer are necessary, and some areas have no requirements at all. Often, only certified plumbers and electricians are allowed to pull the necessary permits. To find out the specific regulations in your area, you can contact your local building department. Alternatively, a local water softener installer or plumber will be familiar with the requirements and can typically pull the permits for you. Regardless of local laws, it is always recommended to hire a licensed professional to ensure the system is sized and installed correctly. You can use tools like Angi’s state licensing tool to verify an installer's license status.

While it depends on how complicated the unit and installation is, it takes two to four hours to install a water softener unit, on average. It might take longer if pipes need to be replaced. You should make sure the installation area is clear of any objects that might get in the way before you begin.

There are several things that can shorten the life of a water softener. Homes with very hard water may have to replace the unit sooner because the water softener works harder to filter out the hard minerals. High water usage and infrequent maintenance can also put more strain on a water softener.

Yes. Hard water is what causes scale buildup, and a whole-house filter provides numerous benefits beyond water softening. Any water that enters your home will go through the filter, which cleans up all water that you will use for cooking, bathing, and drinking. A whole-house water filter also blocks harmful particles like heavy metals.
