"Miller and his colleagues were able to do a lot of things quickly. Along with everything else, they also grabbed some old furniture that I needed help moving to the curb. They took several cares to make sure nothing was damaged during the move, including wrapping the furniture, turning off all the lights, and packaging the picture frames."

"I had an almost immediate response from Justin. He was very professional and did his best to fit me in ASAP. He was a great communicator and when he and Jason arrived he was friendly and efficient and in probably under 15 minutes had replaced the door sweep on my front door. But wait, there is more! As I was writing out the check and we were talking (very comfortable and kind and knowledgeable), I mentioned I might have something else for him to look at at another time. He said, let take a look -- and was able to fix an electrical issue/replace an under counter light with absolute ease and speed! I cannot say how impressed I am with HomeMate Handyman. If I could give 10 stars I would! They were just the absolute best. They really, REALLY know their stuff! They even talked to me about things I might want to look at in the future. I will be doing that! Thank you so very much for the great experience and the quality work! I highly recommend them!"

Hauling questions, answered by experts

While tipping junk haulers is not required or expected, it is a greatly appreciated gesture for a job well done. Many junk removal companies state that tips are welcome but not mandatory. A good rule of thumb is to tip between 10% and 20% of the total bill, or a flat amount of $10 to $20 per worker. For exceptional service, a tip of $20 to $50 for the entire crew is also appropriate. It is often best to give cash directly to each worker at the end of the job.

Consider tipping if the crew:

  • Goes above and beyond your expectations.

  • Handles heavy, bulky items or navigates difficult spaces like tight hallways or stairs.

  • Works in inclement weather or deals with potentially hazardous materials.

  • Takes extra care to protect your home and property.

  • Accommodates a last-minute scheduling change.

There are a few ways you can save money on concrete disposal, including hiring a company that specializes in the service. While you’ll pay for the labor, professional removal companies can save you money on dumping fees if they can recycle or sell the old concrete. If possible, you can also do your own concrete demolition, which can cut down on labor costs. Paying for haul-away service only, you could save between $1.50 and $5.50 per square foot of concrete instead of paying for demolition and removal.

Composting can be a great alternative if you’re looking for a way to dispose of food scraps without a garbage disposal. If you have the space in your yard, you can install a compost bin or compost pile and add food waste. After enough time and heat, the compost will break down and can be used to mulch your garden.

If you don’t have space for compost, consider city-run programs or local companies that will pick up your food waste.

It depends on the amount of trash you need to unload. Generally, renting a dumpster is more cost-effective than taking trash to the dump yourself if you are dealing with a significant amount of waste. For a small carload worth of junk, it is far cheaper to bring it to the dump yourself.

Once the fire pit ashes have entirely cooled, you can dispose of them with your regular garbage — just wait a day or two to be safe. However, there are lots of good uses for fire pit ashes around the house, so they’re worth saving in a bin outside. For instance, they can help repel pests from your garden and also add rich nutrients to the soil. You can also use the ashes in the winter; ashes are good at providing traction on icy driveways and can even melt snow and ice quickly.
