"After scouring the internet and some friends for local contractors that can remodel my kitchen, I came across Landmark Construction (Charlie) who provided me with a quote that I was comfortable with and that included all the items that I wanted to have in my new kitchen. I hired Charlie and his team of workers to renovate my kitchen, guest bathroom and install new hardwood floors throughout my house. Now that the project is completed, I could not be happier with the end results. The most important thing for me (besides quality of work), was the communication between me and Charlie since I have a very busy schedule and Charlie was always responsive to all my requests.
My new kitchen and guest bathroom looks amazing. The floor came out beautiful. Charlie gave me a time frame of 4-5 weeks for this renovation. But they were able to finish a little bit sooner than that and I was extremely happy. I highly recommend Landmark Construction based on my great experience.

"I hired John Ford to patch cuts and holes in walls and a ceiling, all created when a plumber cut holes here and there looking for a leak. I needed the job done quickly since I had an assessor coming to the house for a ref. He swung by the day after I called, gave me a very reasonable quote and told me his background and experience before I even asked. We scheduled the job for two days later. The work was completed on time, and John did an excellent job – you’d never know it was patched, including the ceiling! He laid drop cloths before starting, and cleaned up afterward including vacuuming. While waiting for the mud on the patches to dry before the next step, he repaired a loose stairway handrail, and hung some racks for me in the kitchen.
John is very professional and concerned about doing the job right - he even used some special metal toggle bolts to hang the kitchen racks (instead of the plastic ones Ikea sold me) which he said would better support the heavy pans I wanted to hang, and explained why. The handrail is now screwed to studs, instead of nailed. Throughout the project, John talked to me about what he was doing and why, which I really liked.
John has many years experience in the construction industry and really knows what he is doing. He is very professional and concerned about doing the job right, and on time. I will definitely hire John again for other projects I am planning and some other fixes I need, and will recommend him to family and friends. I am thrilled to have found a great handyman, thanks to Angie's List.

"We did a small project with them to install wiring for a new ceiling fan. They were quick and did a great job. I appreciated that they tried to remove as little amount of sheet rock as they could to limit the amount of mess that was made. Overall great job,. Would hire again"

"Pete was very good fixing the problem. The pull chain broke off inside the unit. I took it apart and tried to fix it myself, but was not able to get to the unit with the chain....so much for being a home mechanic! Pete made one short stop here to get the unit apart. He didn't have a replacement part with him, and to save time I went to Fan Diego store for the replacement, and he installed it on another visit a few days later. Problem solved. He is very friendly and worked well. I am having him back soon to repair another ceiling fan that has quit working.

"I bought a 2 hour Angie's List deal hoping to get my outdoor lights repaired. I was hoping there would be enough time left to replace a broken ceiling fan as well. Mehran arrived on time and got to work right away diagnosing my outdoor lights. He came up with a plan to make them more efficient and pointed out potential problems to avoid. As soon as I pick up some supplies he'll put me on his schedule to complete that job. He then went right to work on replacing my ceiling fan. He was quick and cleaned up the mess from all the dust and put my room back to the way it was. He was very pleasant and professional. He finished within the two hour time frame so I did not have to pay any additional cost. I hope to be able to call Mehran soon so he can get started on replacing my outdoor lights."

Ceiling Fans questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can install a ceiling fan where a standard light fixture is, as the electrical wiring is often similar and may not need to be replaced. The most important step is to ensure the ceiling can support the fan's weight and motion. You will need to replace the existing light fixture's electrical box with a fan-rated electrical box, which is specifically designed to handle the extra weight and vibration. These boxes will be labeled as suitable for ceiling fan support and will indicate the maximum weight they can hold. Before you begin, also consider if you need an extension rod for a high ceiling or a special mount for an angled ceiling.

When choosing a mounting bracket, you have the option between flush mounts and downrod mounts. Flush mounts are the better option for low ceilings as they feature a lower profile. Downrod mounts are the optimal choice for rooms with high ceilings as they offer a pole that adjusts the height of the fan.

The square footage of your room will dictate the correct ceiling fan blade size. For example:

  • Rooms smaller than 75 square feet require a fan that is 29 to 36 inches.

  • Rooms up to 175 square feet require 42- to 48-inch fans.

  • Rooms up to 350 square feet require 52- to 56-inch fans.

  • Expansive spaces over 350 square feet need a fan larger than 60 inches.

There are many types of ceiling fans available, each designed for different spaces and needs. Standard ceiling fans are the most common type and work well in most rooms. Low-profile ceiling fans are better suited for rooms with low ceilings. Smart ceiling fans can be controlled with a smartphone or voice commands. For larger spaces with ceilings between 10 and 25 feet high, large ceiling fans are ideal. Dual-motor fans have two motors to produce more airflow in multiple directions. You can also find energy-efficient or Energy-Star models that can be up to 60% more efficient, as well as fans with built-in lights or retractable blades.

Installing a ceiling fan where no wiring exists is a difficult and potentially dangerous job that should not be attempted as a DIY project. It is recommended to hire a certified electrician to build the necessary electrical infrastructure. In some areas, building codes require this work to be done by a professional to ensure safety and compliance. Due to the complexity, this type of installation is a significant job that could cost up to $2,000.
