"Kuhnhofer Builders were professional, on-budget, honest, and hard working. Our home was a rebuild after it burned down and we are so happy in our new home. Project was completed earlier than projected. Could not have been happier."

"I was very impressed with Sentri Homes - their customer service was excellent. They sent a subcontractor to install some vinyl laminate in my bathroom and he ended up getting glue all over the carpet in our bedroom. The sub ended up ghosting both me and Sentri, leaving me stuck with a ruined carpet. Sentri stuck with me for over a month to get the carpet replaced with the identical original and to get the vinyl job 100% completed. The carpet was a Home Depot exclusive and Sentri handled everything with them. I will be using Sentri for a much bigger renovation I have coming up soon, because I know that they will make sure everything gets done right no matter what problems come up. The vinyl looks great too."

"One of my relatives recommended to me this home remodeling company after he hired them for his house and they were super happy due to the fantastic job that Best Builders did at his home. At my house I wanted a new patio deck built before the summer will start. Sofia from the main office scheduled me an appointment with one of her people and she sent out Zohar, who worked with me step by step through this entire remodeling project. Zohar is a great guy and a professional person! He made sure that everything is being done exactly as it was promised in the design stage AND each change that he wanted to do (in order to make this project better than it should). The new deck including the covers looks fantastic and it came out much better than I imagined. I’m glad to have worked with Best Builders Group!"

"We are deeply grateful and appreciative for the work that everyone at Pearl did to help us navigate and work with Los Angeles County to complete our project, especially considering how long it took to get through our initial stages of approval. We purchased a property with an existing illegal garage conversion and, for over 5 years, various folks from Pearl worked along with us to get our project through and help us legalize the structure and clear code violations from our title. We are ever grateful that everyone at Pearl stuck with us and saw our project through to the end. We are especially thankful for all the work of Campbell, Jacob, Richard and Bar in the initial stages of the project and we are deeply appreciative of Jorge, who guided the project through its final stages and approvals. Jorge was always willing to answer any questions in a timely manner, give us guidance where needed, meet us at the Building and Safety office to help us obtain permits when the department was being difficult, and overall went above and beyond to make sure everything was completed and finalized, as well as ensuring our satisfaction was met. Complete with new windows, siding and paint, our 100 year old bungalow and fully permitted ADU are stunningly beautiful and we receive compliments nonstop from our neighbors! Thank you, Pearl!!!"

"It went very well! EZ Builders did a very professional job. I really needed the work done last year right before the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, but waited until the last minute. EZ Builders was recommended by a friend of mine across town, so I was apprehensive at first, but once I saw the professional job these guys did in taking out the old tiles and replacing them with someone new and modern, I was glad I listened to my friend. It wasn't a tremendously large job, but it was done with the utmost professionalism and craftsmanship. I'd recommend these guys to anyone who needs work done around their house or apartment. They even provided a few useful tips and suggestions I plan to implement in the future."

Home Building questions, answered by experts

Modular homes can go up or down in value depending on a few factors. In areas where real estate is appreciating, the value of modular homes is likely to increase, and vice versa. Additionally, the value of modular homes depends partially on the area. In cities where every other home is stick-built, modular homes might be considered a functional obsolescence, in which case they could be less desirable and go down in value. In either case, though, modular homes can still be a good investment, especially since they provide housing at a lower upfront cost.

Whether it’s more affordable to gut a house than build a new one depends on the markets where you'd be buying and selling. However, it’s usually less expensive to renovate a home than to build new construction.

Most homeowners pay between $100,000 and $200,000 for demolition and remodeling costs, whereas the average cost to build a new home is between $139,000 and $531,300.

It is a good idea to check in with your local city and state regulations before committing to building a shipping container home no matter where you live. This concept is pretty new across the country, and many places won’t let you build one.

The International Code Council (ICC) offers guidelines for home builders on the safe use of ISO intermodal shipping containers repurposed as building components, which can be helpful to review when planning or designing a shipping container home.

Yes, a home builder or contractor should have the proper licensing and insurance. Licensing requirements vary by state and municipality, but most states mandate that a builder holds at least a general contractor’s license. For specialized work such as plumbing, electrical, roofing, or sewage systems, individual licenses may be required, in which case the builder may subcontract the work. You can use Angi’s state licensing tool to review your local guidelines and confirm a builder's credentials. As you browse professionals, you can also look for the “Angi Certified” badge. This indicates the business meets our certification standards, which include passing a criminal background check, holding applicable state and local licenses, and maintaining an average rating of 3.0 or better.

Yes, you can finance new construction, though the process often requires a different type of loan than one for an existing property. There are several financing options available:

  • Construction-to-Permanent Loan: This is a common option where a single loan covers the building costs and then converts into a traditional mortgage once construction is complete and you move in.

  • Construction Loan (Stand-Alone): This type of loan provides funding only for the duration of the construction project. Once the house is built, you will need to pay the loan in full, typically by securing a separate, standard mortgage.

  • Builder Financing: Some custom homebuilders offer their own financing options, which may only require a down payment to begin the building process.

  • Bridge Loan: This can be a useful short-term loan to fund your new construction while you are in the process of selling your old home.

  • Home Equity Options: If you are building a second home, you might be able to use a home equity line of credit (HELOC) or a cash-out refinance on your current property.

It's also important to be aware that some lenders may have restrictions on financing for DIY house builds, so be sure to verify that you can secure financing before starting your project.
