"Stay away from this company. Unreliable, shoddy work, overpriced and does not keep their commitment for any of this! Shocking that I have to write this review but I do not want anyone else to have the same experience I did. I hired them several months ago to repair a broken outdoor outlet and several other small tasks. At that point last fall they were great! On time, professional and did the job efficiently. For $2000+. Less than 2 months later the outlet stopped working. I called to have them come back to repair that AND to remove some sconces before I had painters coming. They scheduled me for 12pm-2pm and didn't arrive until 4:40pm at which point it was too dark outside to repair the outlet so the only work that was performed was removing 2 sets of sconces. $400. The painting in the house is done so I need the sconces put back up and that darn outlet repaired. I called a week ago to get on the schedule. I was promised a call back in 24 hours to schedule. I never received a call. I had to call them a week later at which point I was told they could not get to me for another week or 2. That was unacceptable and, quite frankly, I didn't trust that they would follow through. After letting them know how angry I was, they called me to say they would send a technician this morning between 9:00am and 11:00am. At 10:09am they called to say they were not coming and could they come next week. My answer was NO. I want a refund for the work they did on the broken outlet and I will find another more reliable electrician. Not sure what happened to their customer service, but things appear to have changed internally and it has negatively impacted their practice. A shame. A company that was highly regarded is now the place that no one should call."

"I hired Dave Lewis of Swan Pools West to completely redo our 40 year old backyard and pool. This included removing and replacing lower and upper concrete patios, used brick perimeter walls and pool coping, new tile, new mini pebble plaster, new patio cover, new pool equipment and new water, electrical and gas lines. I chose Dave after conducting due diligence, obtaining bids and interviewing 4 pool contractors, and visiting recently completed projects. Having represented hundreds of contractors, subcontractors and architects as a construction lawyer for 40 years, I consider myself quite knowledgeable about construction, and was present every day of construction, which lasted 3 months. Dave or his son Todd visited the project several days a week during critical phases such as demolition, rebar placement, gunite spraying, construction pours, and the application of the mini-pebble stucco finishing. Dave, Todd, and their employees Jaime, Javier, Lupe and Robert, as well as his independent plumber, electrician, and subcontractors (rebar, gunite, concrete and mini-pebble stucco) were professional, on time, and responded immediately to any questions and additions I had during the entire course of the job. His employees arrived every morning by 6;30 am, and would wait in their trucks until 7 am before entering our backyard. (When the two day demolition work with Bobcats had accidentally tripped the earthquake safety valve on my home's gas meter, shutting off our water heater one Friday, Dave drove to our home on Saturday morning to reset it and relight our water heater, as we had a dinner party for 18 guests that night!) My wife and I had all of our dreams and expectations meet by the finished project. We couldn't be any happier with the result, which is breathtaking. (Photos attached.) I would be happy to speak with anyone considering hiring Dave and Swan Pools West, and permit them to view the result (as others had done for me.)"

You may need a permit for a portable generator if you’ll be installing a transfer switch for your primary residence or similar work. Otherwise, a permit for other uses may not be necessary. When choosing the right size generator for your needs, consider a few items to help calculate the wattage you’ll need. Start by determining which household items and appliances you want to power, and then add the wattages together. Check out the wattage of these essential appliances:

  • Refrigerator: 600 watts

  • Large dehumidifier: 700 watts

  • Large window air conditioner: 1,400 watts

  • Water heater: 3,000 watts

Running home appliances like these requires a partial or whole-house generator. A portable generator may be enough to power your home if you only plan to keep a refrigerator and freezer running. 

A home that is 2,500 square feet will likely need a 20kW to 25kW generator. Consult your local generator installer to confirm the generator size needed to power your home before purchasing a new one. Be sure to consider how much power your necessary devices need to run.

If you have a transfer switch properly installed, the generator and main electrical power cannot feed the system at the same time. However, you should still shut off the power at your main circuit breaker panel before activating the generator. If you do that, you’ll simply need to shut off the generator and reset your circuit breaker once the local power comes back on.

In most municipalities, you will need a permit to install a permanent home generator, including emergency backup, partial-home, and whole-home generators. A permit for a generator usually costs between $50 and $250, depending on where you live. Your electrician or certified generator installer will usually pull the permit for you—and might be required to do so by your building department—but you’ll be on the hook for the cost of the permit. You should ask your installer before agreeing to any work if they will pull the necessary permits for your project.
